    Tdi purchase help?

    Hi all,

Im going to buy a Tdi discovery, 1997 or '98 model, and am just after a few pointers on things to look out for, i.e. any problematic body points / mechanical issues?

    thanks for your help

(PS. couldn't pinpoint anything specific using an archives search)

a full service history should be high on you list including when the timing belt was last changed, i don't think the later tdi's needed the timing belt upgrade kit bur i'm sure one of the lads on here should be able to confirm this

i don't have a disco so i'm not sure what to look for body wise

    good luck

I've got a 96 TDi Disco, and have had a fantastic run with it. Excellent all round 4WD - comfort and ability.

Only body problems it's got are:
    - underneath both rear door catches (on the body, not the door) the sills are starting to bubble with a bit of rust.
    - The steel surrounding the curved 'Safari Windows' at the rear/top on the roof is starting to go rusty. I think some early Discos leaked a lot from these windows, but no problem in mine, just the rust.

I always thought the bodies were made of alloy, but obviously not becuase aluminium shouldn't ever rust.

Having said that - the car lives outdoors on a farm so it is out in all weathers all year. Bound to be better on a nicely garaged one.

Steel turrent (roof) and body shell and bonnet. So check all spot welded joints in body frame, footwells if you can as the A/C can soak the carpets if the drain blocks up (most do) other than that the rest is usually strait forward and check as you would any other car. Motor wise, make sure it has a full service history, and if not in the book find out who serviced it and what has been done.

Check the transmission, as they dont like dirty oil or overheating, more important if it was used as a tow vehicle.

I'll add more as I rember
