I have asked a few of the overseas companies in the UK about this but have never got a response which leads me to think they are charging the extra 10% and keeping it.

Foreign companies that aren't resident in Australia aren't subject to Australian law - yes, there's lots of VAT scams overseas.

If the shipper isn't registered for gst you may be asked to pay the gst before it gets delivered.

Any idea how this is supposed to work?

No, the shipping company/customs broker contacts you not customs. The $95 fee is for lodging the paperwork, and paying the government fees to clear it, even if you have already paid the GST. If you are concerned Am services is a scam, contact Customs to check they are genuine, but if they are you need to pay the fee. Most/all of it are government fees so you can’t avoided them.

suck it up. The government will get you anyway.

Wow. I've been invoiced for $95 fee plus $244 duty & GST. I've already paid the GST and provided the purchase receipts for this. Fun times ahead. All for a parcel valued $1070.....

That’s why I don’t pay GST overseas - even if they are registered for it, it becomes a pain as you’ll likely get hit on the way in as well. Should be easy enough for you to prove, but more stuffing around. You may need to prove the supplier is registered for GST too or else you may have just paid them 10% for nothing.

Hope you get it sorted soon.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Back in November I bought a item (vehicle part) on E-Bay and it was about a three week delivery time.
The item didn't show up, then about 7-14 days later the seller contacted me to say that customs had returned the parcel to them.
They felt if they tried to resend it, the same thing would happen again, so they offered to refund my coin. I asked if they had any idea why the parcel was turned around, but they were none the wiser. It was only a small item, under twenty bucks. I flicked E-Bay an email to see if they could throw any light on why this occurred, but the same, they had no idea either. In the end I opted for the refund.
    Confusing to say the least.

    Cheers, Mick.

trust me.i worked in the business. Customs don’t return an item ever. The worst that happens is Customs might refuse entry after contacting you, and you can’t provide the write permits if any.

But it then it’s the carrier who has to return it or just abandon it depending on the instructions of the sender.

Just got a $316 bill from DHL for $1500au (inc shipping) from uk... bit of a shock as had not hit this limit before and had order parts less than 1k no issues, I only wish Id ordered my 2 parts in 2 separate orders to not hit the limit....

$59 Duty Tax, $147 GST, $88 Gov Customs Fee, $22 DHL Fee

Maybe a VAT would be cheaper at this rate....
