    Rabies vaccine 0, 7 & 21 Days

    Hello All,

I just had my second of three scheduled Rabies vaccine injections today - which is "Day 7" or a week after the initial vaccine.

Where the first vaccine was injected last week on the 27th of November which is "Day 0".

Now I asked a doctor today and they maintained the third injection should be 21 days after Day 7; whereas the Practice Nurse at the same surgery says it is 21 days after Day 0.

So should I have the last injection 21 days after Day 0 which will be the 18th of December
    Or
21 Days after today's or Day 7's injection - which will be Christmas December 25th?

The box of Rabipur just has Day 0, 7 & 21 written on the label.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

It would make sense to me that it would be 21 days from day zero - without being told I would have just assumed this. Doesn’t make sense for it to be 21 days after day 7 to be honest but I’m only going on my comprehension, not any understanding of the vaccine.

I bet the Nurse has given more injections of this than the Doc as well. 😉

But I thought we don't have rabies in Oz. Is this for Hendra or bat Lyssavirus??

I would be following the Practice Nurses advice, day 21 is the 21st day after the initial (Day 0) dose.

But reading this info sheet the nurse and the doctor are both correct, see table 2 schedule A http://www.who.int/immunization_stan...uct_Insert.pdf

Same vaccine I believe, since both rabies and lyssavirus are of the same viral family.

    Hello Ron,

I am going overseas for a holiday next year. Rabies was on the list of things to get jabbed for.

    Kind regards

I had it recently and I think from memory it was 0, 7 and 21. The practise nurse is probably a vaccination nurse so better informed than the doctor.
Mine was for exposure to bats, even though only 1% of bats have lyssavirus and Hendra comes from horses, not bats.
But if travelling it's a smart thing to do because of possible bites from street dogs.
Last time I was tested I had double the required level of antibodies, so that's good.

I asked the Doc and the nurse today. Both mentioned it is a guide and a day or so either side would not be an issue. They happily disagreed on what 21 days is
