The designer this must have been in a real **** stirring mood. Unless it has some historical significance, you would think a simpler intersection would have been designed?
Hhmmm. looking again at the Daytime video the Britannia Corner is very much like that & the Traffic certainly seems to flow well, albeit some in a reverse direction.
Shirley the Designers would have considered this but I think maybe there was lack of room to lay it all out.
Or maybe it was Professional egos? [bighmmm]
Have had the miss fortune to to navigate that round about a few times to visit a customer. If what they said is true it has an accident a day with the tow trucks parked in side streets waiting for clients. Experiencing the bedlam that it is can well understand why.
I played that vid of the swindon one at 0.25x speed on youtube a few times. One potential issue is that people can easily end up blocking other traffic. Just in that section of video there are a few dodgy occurrences, including a couple or so vehicles that go significantly over the give way line. The designers have the challenge of one of the roads being triple lane in each direction, plus there isnt actually a lot of space.
It seems the common modern solutions to having more than two roads crossing is to have a roundabout big enough for safe lane changing within the roundabout, like the one around parliament, or perhaps the more compact solution of having two roundabouts.
I would have thought one of the first things to do is to have a dedicated left turn only lane separate to the roundabout. Safely diverting all the left turners and keeping them out of the roundabout would seemingly take a percentage of heat out of the main roundabout.
Having dedicated left turn lanes transforms a three lane roundabout into a two lane roundabout.
Also, overhead signs advising people which is the best lane to start in for any given destination.
