Tourist numbers into the bay are huge, and there's only two roads in and out, this one is the main road in from the Pacific highway.
The congestion of a morning is almost Sydneyesque.
The shame is that almost all the roads across the council area are buggered, patch upon patch upon patch, potholes everywhere.
In comparison Ballina to the south and Tweed to the north have lovely roads on the whole.
I think the problem with Byron, and someone with a better handle on local government history can correct me, is that the present situation is a result of budget and planning decisions from 15-25 years ago.
I blame the bulk of the 'tourist' problem on Queenslanders coming south to find a nice, relatively quiet beach, or a beach they can surf when there's a southerly/sou'easter.
 (had to slip that one in
)
