Half Aus loop trip- Do I need a windscreen stone guard?

Just getting the Deefer & campervan ready for an upcoming W.A/ NT half loop trip including The Gibb River Rd.
I have the material to fab up an old style windscreen stone guard. What are the seasoned travellers opinion of these?
I've copped a few nasty stones over the years & figure on this trip a few idiots will go roaring past me on the gravel sections..

Pro'ly not if your insured for windscreen replacement and carry some of that repair stuff, like this

Also do you have a stone guard at the back to stop stones bouncing of the camper into the rear window as that can be a lot messier?

has your insurance got free windscreen replacement?
I traveled on some outback SA roads, the rear window was more of a worry with rocks being thrown up from the trailer I was towing. they also sand ( rock blasted ) the paint off the drawbar

Have you ever used a stonegaurd? Some people can't focus past them. If you are comfortable looking beyond the mesh, I'd say go for it.
Its far more convenient to complete the trip, with the comment "I didn't need that stonegaurd.", than "I wish I'd fitted that stonegaurd, it would've saved the windscreen."
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

I've done a few trips to the Kimberley (& lots of other areas of Aus) & have never felt the need for a windscreen stone guard..........A few minor stone chips but have never had a shattered screen in the deefer.
I like to retain easy access to the screen so I can clean it regularly.

You don't need one. Even if you do cop a few stone chips, they will be easier to see past than a mesh over your entire field of vision.

Thanks for the feedback, the camper I have has an extended drawbar so I hope that any rock bouncing back will have lost most momentum but this will be its maiden voyage - with me at least, so I am pretty clueless. As for the windscreen stone guard I have the same thoughts as V8Ian, but will probably make it a fold down type & use it only on gravel roads. I have full Shannons insurance but its the inconvenience I want to avoid. Defender windscreens -assuming I destroy one- would not exactly be "off the shelf"
