vic just started load shedding. much earlier than i expected.
but we couldn't rely upon the wind when we needed it.
capacity planning needs to be done with the expectation that wind wont be available when its needed.
if it can bring down prices at non peak times, great (results still pending), but time and time again its not there when we needed it..
today in vic will be interesting.

Cool change has come through here 20 mins ago (Queenscliff).
Power is off........ fault at Bridge Rd Drysdale (Powercor). Same as last time a year ago.
All the rednecks in town were going 'load shedding, load shedding' then, even after the state gov made Powercor (the distributor) compensate each meter holder $80 for crap supply.
I might get to pick up a slab or two if any of them are game to bet on the real cause of today's outage.
I might also be wrong haha.

Just confirmed that AEMO has asked Powercor and Ausnet to start load shedding in Melbourne. 8000 customers have been switched off so far deliberately.

Thank you for reminding us of this. I find it amusing that these threads always become a ****ing contest about how hot it was back in the day and that we've all become princess'. Meanwhile there are an awful lot of people out there who for one reason or another find it difficult to cope with these unusually hot days. It was touch and go for me this morning whether or not I made the trip up to casualty, so the tough guy stuff does start to wear a little thin.
Cheers,
Jon
Cold kills far more people than heat.t's interesting reading posts about heat - there is a common misunderstanding but heat kills more vulnerable people than all other natural disasters put together. Deaths in heatwave conditions go off the charts. Just something to be mindful of.
Can you please supply a reference to back up your claims.
I know I can find one or many more with a lot of work, but you made the claim.

Here is one reference
Study: Cold kills 20 times more people than heat
Bee utey, I don't know how you can still be convinced about wind power when it contributed 4% repeat 4% to power available on Thursday. At times during the day wind power in NSW contributed zero, ebven though at times it must have contributed.
What use is this?
This is just useless.

It seems to be forgotten that when homes are 'load shedded' that it also takes out the phone. This leaves many without any comms due to them not having a mobile phone.
I would also contend that those most vulnerable to heat stress will be the elderly and these are also the most likely group to not be technology capable and don't have a mobile and/or be pensioners and simply can't afford a mobile phone so rely on a land line.
When the power is turned off the most vulnerable group in society - the elderly - are isolated from help if/when needed in the circumstances of extreme heat when they are most likely to need help.
Load shedding alright.
