Since the Tour Down Under cycling event here we seem to have a plethora of wannabee cycling idjits on our hills roads than ever before.
Take today for instance we joined the main road just after a group of what appeared to be "Social Cyclists" (ie. Not in a proclaimed or signed event ) but just taking up space on the roads.
Each one trying to beat their mates to hell (or the suburbs) it seemed.
Anyway, one guy in drab clothing decided he would overtake me on a RH bend with double lines he went past in the centre of that lane, Just got back over the lines when an unseen vehicle came around the bend, unseen because of native vegetation except by me having a taller vehicle & me not having my head down & up my arse.
Now, what if he had got himself killed, pushed over/against/under the ARMCO etc. What about the oncoming driver? Trauma for life? We would be expected to stop & give aid right?
It gets me that these riders do not need to have 3rd party insurance & Rego that most of us require & yet take up valuable space on our roads & drivers having to put up with their inconsiderate ****ty attitudes with the onus on us to give them a 1 metre wide berth "provided it is safe to do so" even if it means we have to break the law & overtake on double lines something that is anathema to most responsible drivers.
Personally, I think the legislation to allow this was rushed through by our previous Labor Government in a bid to give the populace Bread & Circuses & show what good fellows they were, without thinking it through.
I can see one day that there will be a slow mass extermination of these buggers by normally law abiding motorists unless they lift their game. Already 2 cyclists have died on our roads over the past few weeks but I am not aware of the circumstances. Driver road rage perchance?
I used to tell our son that we had 9 years of married bliss - then he came along.![]()
