I think we have all known there was "maladministration" as well as corruption.
Don't overlook the fact that Federal "Officials" cannot be cross examined. There was me thinking it was the dead fish that stunk to high hell.
Something to hide perhaps, like incompetence & back handers?
Let's keep this non political, and non judgemental. Let's just talk facts. no blame , no judgement., please, or the discussion, this most important discussion, will be shut down.

It isn't a "Secret Discussion" ANYONE can access CA, NO "Secret Squirrel" about CA.
This issue IS Political because it is the government bodies that are in charge of this "Fiasco" that are directly to blame for this ecological disaster.
We can't blame the irrigators because they are just doing what the government has stupidly allowed them to do and blaming the drought is just a "Cop Out", The blame for this rest fairly and squarely on the various government bodies that control and allocate the water from this river system.
The answer to Jonesfam's question as to how to "fix" this problem is to maintain a decent flow of water in the river even if it means that the irrigators go out of business, The health of the river is far more important than growing a bit of cotton
However getting the pollies to grow a "spine" and make these hard decisions is almost impossible but if they don't the fishing fraternity will vote the useless buggers out anyway.
It is time for these government bodies to "Step Up" and do what is right for the river for a change instead of cow towing to the local growers![]()

Hopefully the current rain up north will send some water down and cease the immediate problem, but a long-term fix is still needed and that will have to mean more water flow, less irrigation and not emptying the Menindee Lakes to cover up the lack of water in the rivers, I think.
And herein lies a part of the problem. If more people were environmentaly aware and cared a little more we'd be a part of the way to fixing the problem. (not trying to pick on you personally Pickles2)
Yes we're in drought and it's a natural river pattern, but one must remember that in the earlier part of last century when drought occurred, there wasn't the wholescale pumping out of the water that there is now. Didn't anyone see the 4Corners program last year? which indicated systemic pilfering of water from upstream irrigators. I personally know one of the scientists involved in the investigation of water flows and he was sacked after submitting his report.
Meters that have been tampered with and outright stealing of water has happened for years with nothing being done about it. Hmmmm, I wonder who the federal water minister was at this time. Fox in charge of the henhouse comes to mind.
So lets blame it all on drought. One must remember that "most" of the cotton farms are owned and run by big corporations and are not family run farms. The Macquarie river is a tributary of the M/D too and it has suffered the same fate by greedy cotton interests for nearly 40 years from my memory. Big cotton tried to get their evil hands into the Cooper Ck system quite a few years ago too and thankfully this was vetoed.
The Murray/Darling system is huge and there is no easy fix. It's about time "we" learnt to live with nature and not destroy it. I get ****ed off being referred to as a feathery legged, leftard greenie just because I care and have a different view to others. There wouldn't be half the old growth forest areas left if so called Greenies hadn't protested and galvanised support to save what should and must be left for future generations to enjoy.
Look around when you're out enjoying yourselves in the bush and see the filthy state that some people leave otherwise pristine areas. And we wonder why we're shut out of places! It is not our "right" to go anywhere we like or do anything we want, it is a privilege and the sooner people realise this and become environmentally aware the better.
Sheesh ........my rant over![]()

The Darling river is not supposed to dry out, even in drought. This disaster is man-made.
