Emergency warnings, dust, wind: Victoria endures day of 'code red' danger
Building homes in high risk areas puts fire fighters at risk. That's a no brainer. New land use planning is needed.
Putting homes in high-risk areas is asking too much of firefighters
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Oh how I long for a silent environmentally sustainable conveyance...
The suburban rage of loud engines, of fuel guzzling V8's, of un-mufflered motorbikes, of bogans intent on constantly declaring themselves to the world by disturbing everyone else's peace.
...all fantasising that they are racing car drivers, deliberately flooring it at every opportunity, as if driving at or above the speed limit at all times is the goal in life. A life of perpetual instant acceleration...to the next roundabout, school crossing, set of traffic lights - only 100m away!
0-50km/hr in a 50 zone in zero seconds seems to be the aim, regardless of schools, kindergartens, residential peace and quiet.
Driving the loudest car possible as fast as possible, making as much noise as possible, the egotistical 'look at me' syndrome of urban life. ...perversely being loud doesn't make you stand out from the crowd - it is simply conforming to the expected norm.
The illusion of human dominance over nature. Man and machine conquering the world. The egotistical driving of fuel guzzling loud obnoxious vehicles is absolutely demonstrative of the individualistic self-centred human attitude of power over nature and over all other people except your self and maybe your family and maybe your mates. Like everyone else in the world deserves it.
This is the attitudinal cause of climate change.
Oh how I long for new laws governing noise pollution, just as much as for reducing fossil fuel burning pollution.
Oh how I long for an environmentally sustainable alternative to burning fossil fuels as a mode of transport.
Oh how I long to be able to live in the modern would without being a hypocrite, to be able to commute as necessary, without needing to burn fossil fuel.
...Without the hypocrital need to drive my fuel guzzling vehicle out bush, in order escape the noise pollution of the city and its suburbs.
Oh for the unrealistic days of the horse and buggy, of walking, of slowness in the world being valued.
Oh how I long to be able to breathe clean air and sit in silence without the constant roar of idiots driving too fast past my house all day long. How is this a good way to live?
What the f*** are we all doing!!!???
It will happen mate.
To clarify my somewhat cheeky remark, a couple of comments. Most of the authors complaints could be remedied by moving somewhere other than a large metropolitan area, in 1800 London people would have been annoyed by the incessant noise of horses, the smog from the factories and the piles of dung, Banjo had the same problem:
I am sitting in my dingy little office, where a stingy
Ray of sunlight struggles feebly down between the houses tall,
And the foetid air and gritty of the dusty, dirty city
Through the open window floating, spreads its foulness over all.
And in place of lowing cattle, I can hear the fiendish rattle
Of the tramways and the buses making hurry down the street,
And the language uninviting of the gutter children fighting,
Comes fitfully and faintly through the ceaseless tramp of feet.
And the hurrying people daunt me, and their pallid faces haunt me
As they shoulder one another in their rush and nervous haste,
With their eager eyes and greedy, and their stunted forms and weedy,
For townsfolk have no time to grow, they have no time to waste.
As for environmentally sustainable transport all that electricity has to come from somewhere, where would that be in the foreseeable future when wind and solar cannot produce 50% of our current requirements ?

Tote

Until a new technology is invented to generate large amounts of electricity, for the forseeable future in this country the only places it can come from are large coal fired generators. A couple of enormous power houses right on the coalfields need to be built. As Victoria **** the bed during their privatisation mania (all Victorians say thanks to former premier JK) and shut'em down policy, I think it appropriate that Victoria pay for these if they expect to draw supply from them.
Not according to the people who invest in power generation.
Coal is the most expensive form if energy generation in Australia, even with the subsidies we, as taxpayers, give it. Don't forget, it was the state governments getting rid of their future liabilities that causes the plants to be sold to private companies.
And I've read that there is currently a proposal that new renewables should subsidize coal fired power stations!!!
Britain, a country that started the industrial revolution with coal, has gone for days at a time without using coal fired power stations (yes, they do have some nuclear).
All we need is to take the blinkers off. AGL and Origin are both investing in battery storage, so they are preparing for the changeover to renewables, which are so much cheaper than coal or even gas.
Big business right now in solar for mining sites, in lieu of diesel generators.
As the saying goes "the stone age didn't end because we ran out of stones".
