Thread: Import now or after new rolling 25 year rule

While not an expert by any means, I doubt it will make any difference to the actual import except that for the personal import scheme you need to document your ownership (and I think use), where the 25 year scheme will probably just need proof of age of the vehicle.

I believe Aussie customs are really strict on asbestos in imported vehicles, requiring certification that there is none in brakes, clutch, gaskets, soundproofing, etc. Have heard of cars being impounded and dismantled at owners expense if asbestos is suspected, so check this situation out thoroughly.

Don't you have to be an Aussie to access these Aussie import schemes.

When I used the personal import scheme many years ago I had to show I was an Aussie and had lived overseas with ownership of the vehicle for more than 12 months.

Interestingly, being a Kiwi gives OP the same right to import as an Australian.

As to whether it's better to do as a private import or wait until the 25 year rule comes into place:

1. I'd presume that the cars will be assessed the same - the emphasis is on safety and conformity with ADRs

2. I hadn't heard of the 25 year rule but I wouldn't count on it being in effect when you want to bring your car in - enacting legislation is often delayed.

I'll kept researching. Seems I'd be a fail on the (soon to be finalised) 25 year rule if exactly the same criteria is used as the current pre 1989 rule as I have a later model axles etc:
Vehicles Manufactured Before 1989 Option

I will qualify on the personal imports, so thats good news.

However from what I can gather after importing her successfully (state to be determined) I will fail on many of my modifications even though they are quite modest etc

Can anybody recommend some vehicle modification approvers in NSW and Vic that have dealt with (older) Defenders that I could discuss them with please?

What kind of mods do you have?

I don't know of anyone who specifically deals with Defender imports, maybe speak to Ritter in Melbourne? We brought our car back with us when we moved back from the UK a few years ago and we just went to the phone book and found a workshop that could do ADR compliance.
