Import now or after new rolling 25 year rule

    Hi all,
By way of a very quick intro, I'm a Kiwi in Europe with a much travelled 1991 200TDI Hardtop LWB that I've owned for 19 years.
Brexit is causing me quite a few problems so I'm thinking now is the time to return to the Southern Hemisphere and park up with you guys in Oz for the long term, importing my Landy.

The dilema I have is do I do that in the next few months under the existing 'Personal Import' scheme or wait until Dec/Jan and come in under the new rolling 25 year rule (she's a 1991).

So from what we know now, is there any difference for me in importing her with regards to costs, hassle, modifications allowed etc?
(I have lots of 'sensible' modifications, but I think 90% of them will be fine, will start another thread on those as I'd appreciate comments etc)

Help and references appreciated, I've been reading as much as I can but it gets confusing!

While not an expert by any means, I doubt it will make any difference to the actual import except that for the personal import scheme you need to document your ownership (and I think use), where the 25 year scheme will probably just need proof of age of the vehicle.

I believe Aussie customs are really strict on asbestos in imported vehicles, requiring certification that there is none in brakes, clutch, gaskets, soundproofing, etc. Have heard of cars being impounded and dismantled at owners expense if asbestos is suspected, so check this situation out thoroughly.
    Otherwise, welcome back to the
Southern Hemisphere, it isn’t perfect but still way ahead of anywhere else!

And only 10% of the world's population lives in it, apparently.

Don't you have to be an Aussie to access these Aussie import schemes.

When I used the personal import scheme many years ago I had to show I was an Aussie and had lived overseas with ownership of the vehicle for more than 12 months.

No, it also applies to migrants:

Interestingly, being a Kiwi gives OP the same right to import as an Australian.

As to whether it's better to do as a private import or wait until the 25 year rule comes into place:

    1. I'd presume that the cars will be assessed the same - the emphasis is on safety and conformity with ADRs

    2. I hadn't heard of the 25 year rule but I wouldn't count on it being in effect when you want to bring your car in - enacting legislation is often delayed.

    Thanks everybody,

I'll kept researching. Seems I'd be a fail on the (soon to be finalised) 25 year rule if exactly the same criteria is used as the current pre 1989 rule as I have a later model axles etc:
    Vehicles Manufactured Before 1989 Option

I will qualify on the personal imports, so thats good news.

However from what I can gather after importing her successfully (state to be determined) I will fail on many of my modifications even though they are quite modest etc

Can anybody recommend some vehicle modification approvers in NSW and Vic that have dealt with (older) Defenders that I could discuss them with please?

What kind of mods do you have?

I don't know of anyone who specifically deals with Defender imports, maybe speak to Ritter in Melbourne? We brought our car back with us when we moved back from the UK a few years ago and we just went to the phone book and found a workshop that could do ADR compliance.

I imported a 1996 Defender into WA in 2014 after owning it in Zambia for 3 years, they valued it at $2500... so duty was $300 by memory... as for modifications there was no issue, until I went to license it, being a CT 110 they picked the roll cage, which after consultation with Safety Devices they approved, to many lights so removed one set, the drivers seat belt had to be replaced because of small fray, and of course an oil leak.

Despite what people may say, and the advice I received that it would never be registered... they didn't care about the brush cables, recovery tracks, roof rack or anything else hanging off the vehicle... that was of course in WA so I can't speak for the East Coast.

I may have also got lucky with customs in terms of cleanliness, I had driven it to Namibia for shipping and performed the best clean we could, thinking I would pay on arrival, on clearing customs and driving it home, dust poured out of the back door, I found camel thorn branches in the roof rack and the fridge still had beer in it...
