Many examples of employers getting young people to work for nothing, often for several weeks, and then saying there isn't a job for them. Sounds like slavery to me.

There are plenty of other forms of government taxpayers expenditure to get angry about which are far more concerning than harping on about trying to force legitimate welfare recipients into non-existent jobs. ...The amount of money spent on government spin doctoring and electioneering for a start - it's all about to begin. But we can't go there because it's politics.
I think if you take the shame out of unemployment benefit, that welfare payment is no longer a handout. But an income that some feel entitled to.
Subsequently they will object idea like work for the dole. Or volunteering.
They are not working for nothing. They get paid by all of us in the form of newstart. They can work but are just not able to find a job at the moment. So logically they should either looking for job or doing some work during working hours. Wither picking up garbage, cleaning the streets, helping the charity organization whatever acticivty but leisure
They work, and get paid by centerlink. It's not slavery
Cheers
This scheme sort of worked in the Proserpine area, at the time I was working there, but had too much political input/interference.
“They work, and get paid by centerlink. It's not slavery”
LOL I don’t think anyone is saying Centrelink is slavery.
Rather it’s the expectation that an unemployed person should work for nothing instead of receiving social security payments in order to gain ‘experience’.
The problem with working for the dole is that it’s usually not proper training that leads to employment, but rather a punitive menial labour job that is imposed as punishment for being unemployed.
On the other hand proper Centrelink funded training on the job in a field of choice by the applicant would be a much more positive approach. This is what the contracted job ‘providers’ should be doing.
...of course there will always be a percentage of people who find it very difficult to find employment for whatever reason. I have no problem with my taxes supporting them as I’m sure the vast majority would like a different opportunity from the place they find themselves in.
Empathy is the starting point not punitive labour IMO.

I have to agree that these so called "Service" providers are NOT much use whatsoever as far as placing people in employment and YES I do think that they are "Rorting" the government the way the operate.
Back in the days of the Commonwealth employment agency (We used to call it the "Job Shop") you used to be able to look at ALL the vacancies available (They used to be up on various notice boards in the office) and apply for ANY job you wanted and the Job Shop would help you to get that job, Now you can't even find out what jobs are available let alone apply for them.
Maybe it is the Governments fault by "Handballing" many of the day to day administrative tasks over to the private sector to handle and Not concentrating on actually putting people back into the workforce that has created this extra level ofBureaucracy that is causing so many problems for people.
The system that we have now is NOT working and maybe the money being spent on all these service providers would be better spent creating jobs and getting people back to work.
I don't know the answers But if something is obviously "Broken" then why not Fix it or better still get something completely different that will actually do the job and will get REAL results.
Well said , maybe a few of these providers should try their products. From my experiences the labour hire mobs weren’t much use either.
