Give yourself the best chance of eliminating as much as possible by having a silent number and being on the 'Do not call" register.
Next have some strategies for handling the rest.
If it is an autodialer that has made the call it will either switch the call over to a call centre within a second or two after you answering or will listen for a persons voice answering the phone and then switch to the call centre. So when answering the phone don't speak...listen to what's on the other end:
- If it is dead silent for a second or two and then you suddenly hear background noise, it's a call centre, just hang up. You've cost them the call.
- If it just remains silent then the auto dialer is listening for your voice. It will most likely hang up before you do. If not then just hang up.
- If it's someone that has call you directly, your pause before speaking will usually have them doing the "hello? hello?" thing at which point you can decide to respond or hang up.
- If I forget to do this or they outsmart me, I just hang up... no conversion to be had.
If your phone (landline) has the capability, use number recognition so you can see the number that the call is coming from before you answer it. If it's one you recognise, no problems otherwise, you can decide whether or not to let it go to the answering machine or do the steps above.
For a mobile phone you can take the same approach and also use the number blocking feature or use an app if you don't have it. You can also report the number as spam.
I get absolutely zero unsolicited calls now.
Cheers,
Sean
