    urgent. driving without a propshaft

    Hi all.
    My wife and i are in a bit of a pickle. We are driving our 1996 defender across Timor leste and are currently in the mountains a long way from assistance. This afternoon the universal joint on the front propshaft gave out. This resulted in a broken forward propshaft.
    We removed the propshaft and can drive with the diff lock engaged. It will not drive without the diff locked in low range. we need to get down this mountain to do anything further. So, i have a couple questions which I would very much appreciate some advice on.
    Firstly, is it ok to drive in effectively 2wd for a prolonged period? We have around 50km to go to get to assistance. I understand that steerage may be somewhat compromised but we can manage that.
    Secondly, i know that when driving the defender in 4wd that driving with the diff locked can cause a wind up, particularly on bitumen. From my understanding, with the car in a 2wd mode wind up may not be an issue because power is not being delivered to the front wheels. Is this correct or are we risking further, serious damage by driving with the diff locked?

    Driving with the front prop shaft removed will not compromise steering. You do not need to be in low range.

    Just lock the CDL and you have a "normal" 2wd car so there is no windup as the front wheels are not connected to the drivetrain. As all drive is now going to the rear just go a bit easy on the accelerator when changing gears or backing off and reapplying power as slack in the drivetrain seems to be magnified for some reason.

    Take things easy and you will have no issues.

    With the front shaft removed (and no locked rear diff) you should not get any windup. Avoid the speeding tickets and you should be fine.

    I have done this a few times over the years with either the front or rear shaft removed due to damage and the CDL locked. It was a daily driver back then and had to do a 180km+ return trip to work irrespective of how many driveshafts I had in at the time... You really notice the handling difference, esp on dirt/gravel so take it easy and get a feel for it but you'll do no damage.

    As posted, take it VERY easy. I had to do this years ago in my old RRC. BUT, be aware that the drive system is designed to split the power between front and back, so all the power to one axle is NOT what the strength of the system was designed for. Another tip if you are still there! On VERY steep hills it MAY pay you to reverse up them if you can in low range, as I remember seeing a video some time ago with this exact same problem, where the driver insisted on going front first and subsequently stripped the rear diff!

    His rear sal diff is stronger than a series and they get around Ok sometimes

    As the others say - no issues, except watch out for changed handling, take it easy. If you use low range at all, just go easy on the throttle - you probably won't break anything, but it is possible. In high range - no issues, except you now have a two wheel drive veehicle.

    Hi guys.
    Thanks so much for your responses and advice. We drove down closer to help today. 'Twas a slow trip down some rocky and muddy tracks, but we made it as far as we could. We'll tackle the rest tomorrow.
    The defender performed well and we only got bogged once. It handled a liitle heavier than normal but nothing alarming.
