I'm not sure whether to be touched by their concern or outraged by their paternalism, but I'm going to plump down on the side of concern, as my experience has been that country people are usually very nice.
Daughter went away camping with three girlfriends.....they decided to go to a pub for lunch one day...
Ordered one beer and three soft drinks....Barman asked for ID, had a look and said give me 5....comes back suggesting she buy four soft drinks. Daughter says but I’m 18 and would like a beer thanks. The barman said they were not keen to sell her a beer because of the age of the group and she had only just turned 18 and no adult with them.
To her credit she stood her ground and requested a beer, which she eventually got. And just to rub salt in she had a second beer.
Country pub an hour south west of Brisbane pretty much empty, one would think they would appreciate the business.
I probably would have went elsewhere for the feed just to annoy them.

I've found you don't have to go far out of town to be in the country, once the road goes down to single lane, strip road or dirt road, people are much nicer and will stop to offer help if you are changing a tyre, and wave at you, even if they are not driving a Land-rover.
Unless they were causing trouble or appeared inebriated he had no right to refuse service.

Seems to me 18 is 18, not just coming up 18, or have just turned 18. It is the law, not at the pub's discretion & if they were not causing any trouble then shirley they would have been entitled . The Pub's arse was covered in case the local lawman walked in.
Maybe the pub could invest in a Breathalyser to be sure.
