    New vs old style tyres

I was wondering if anyone has any insight to how a set of new off-road tyres compares to the old style tyres that was used back in the expedition days. I remember watching some old tv shows when the Defender going across Africa was using skinny tractor style tyres. How would that compare to new one‘s we use today. I would be interested to hear comments / stories on how they managed and practices of letting the air down etc.

This is from Tom Sheppard's Vehicle Dependent Expedition. It is from 1998 so it would be interesting to read what he would have to say given todays choice of tyres. He comes firmly down on the Michelin XZL 7.50x16

Same here - unfortunately Michelin have stopped making the XZL 750/16’s now, but the 255/100/16’s on my 101 are readily available if you have enough money. 😉
