The Washing your hands one is a bit OMG for the time
In 1847 Semmelweis, who was an obstetrician, (a doctor specializing in childbirth), published evidence that when doctors washed their hands before examining or treating patients, the mortality rate for women in his birthing ward in Vienna, Austria, was greatly reduced
Further to your trivia, suggesting the steering wheel was invented eight years after the first car, is a little misleading. By the time of Benz's cars in the 1880s, steam road vehicles had been around for nearly 100 years - and some of them used steering wheels, as did most steam traction engines, which had become relatively common by Benz's time. In any case, the steering wheel had been in pretty general use in many ships and boats for two centuries before Benz. But many motoring pioneers preferred tiller steering, and Lanchester used it in production vehicles up to about 1912.

And a bit of trivia about Semmelweiss - as a reward for insisting on doctors in his hospital washed their hands - he got fired. Perhaps because he was Hungarian, not Austrian, and the hospital was in Vienna, but his "lunatic ideas", which he pursued by publication and publicly criticizing doctors who ignored him, calling the murderers, he was put in a lunatic asylum and soon died from injuries, possibly as a result of being beatedn by guards.

Could be in Jokes - You brought up 'arise Engineers'

An Engineer dies and goes to hell. He's hot and miserable, so he decides to take action. The A/C has been busted for a long time, so he fixes it. Things cool down quickly.
The moving walkway motor jammed, so he unjams it. People can get from place to place more easily.
The TV was grainy and unclear, so he fixes the connection to the Satellite dish and now they get hundreds of high def channels.
One day, God decides to look down on Hell to see how his grand design is working out and notices that everyone is happy and enjoying umbrella drinks. He asks the Devil what's going on?
The Devil replies, "Things are great down here since you sent us that engineer."
"What?? An engineer? I didn't send you one of those, that must have been a mistake. Send him back up right this minute."
The Devil responds, "No way! We are going to keep our engineer. We like this guy."
God demands, "If you don't send him to me immediately, I'll sue!"
The Devil laughs. "Where are YOU going to get a lawyer?"

Reminds me of early days of us / USSR. space race days... Yanks trashed zillions on a biro that operated in zero-G... Russkis merely shrugged, - and continued to use PENCILS.

World's 'oldest' marathon runner dies at 114 in hit-and-run

"Fauja Singh, a British-Indian man believed to be the world's oldest marathon runner, has died after being hit by a car in India at the age of 114.Police say Singh was crossing a road in the village where he was born in Punjab when an unidentified vehicle hit him. Locals took him to hospital, where he died.
Singh, a global icon, set records by running marathons across multiple age categories, including when he was over 100. He began running at 89 and ran nine full marathons between 2000 and 2013, when he retired.
His running club and charity, Sikhs In The City, said its upcoming events in Ilford, east London, where he had lived since 1992, would be a celebration of his life and achievements."

Honestly dying on the job may suite some of us nutters

    RIP Fauja Singh

Just seen this on a couple of news bulletins, and they say ''believed to be'' as he didn't have a birth certificate, so no Guiness World Record.

Which reminds me of a story, one the Guiness heirs was in a car accident, and taken to hospital, when he got there he was asked if he earned 11 000 pounds (a year) to qualify for the NHS subsidised treatment and he said, '' Some days I do, some days I don't. "

    Love thy Neighbour

    "Holding back the tide

Professor David Kennedy is a geomorphologist ? a scientist who studies landscapes ? at the University of Melbourne.
He said the first thing to know was, basically, you could not hold back the tide.
"As soon as you put in one seawall, you just transfer the demand next door," he said.
"As a rule of thumb, when you put in a seawall, you double the erosion rates next door.""

Why a seawall might not protect both beaches and homes from coastal erosion - ABC News
