Thread: Fat shamed or fair enough?

We would all like more space. Paying for it is an option I'd take before making a tosser out of myself.
I get skinny dork shamed perhaps? I often get put in the seat with the emergency exit. They ask me. I had a gent who was very apologetic about encroaching from his seat into mine on a very full plane once. There is always to sides to the story. His was pretty crook.

More room occurs in Business class. I am a tight ass and do not travel that way despite having rather long legs for the cheap seats so I would be grumpy with others if they do the same as long as they are not a tosser

How on earth are you supposed to get around him, in a real emergency, as you're pushing smaller people out of the way left, right and centre whilst heading for the exit?

Ok so I booked a flight to check this out for my self.
It says that you must satisfy the exit row terms and conditions, and you click the bold header to read them.
Its all pretty obvious, should have the Ts and Cs to save himself from the embarrassment.

I vaguely remember my very first flight way back in early 60’s on a DC3. The whole family and our luggage was weighed at check-in to trim the aircraft.

Having worked for QF a number of years ago I know load control do move customers around even on the larger aircraft such as 747’s.

I got seated next to a seriously obese young guy a couple of years ago on a Melbourne - Sydney flight. I thought about asking to move but he was so obviously embarrassed by his size that I just smiled and sat there - it's only a short flight in any case.

We had some engineers on a vessel one back let’s be polite and say a few years ago. They both weighed over 300 lbs. they couldn’t pick up a spanned if they dropped it. They always wanted the window seat on the chopper as it was easiest to get in to. But we always said “ f....y...” in the back no wY we want to climb over you in an emergency. But that was just my group. Others shrugged their shoulders and said ok. It’s only when s.. hits the fan that it’s a real issue and likelihood is remote. But I want odds in my favor.

Fine. You just have to be in reasonable shape. It's not just overweight that would be excluded but also pregnant, infirm, disabled in a way that prevents you from using the door handle (like no arms), being too young etc. I have often requested the exit door seat as you get tons of legroom and don't have to push back on the persons seat in front when they recline :-) Your given instructions on how to open the door and so far I have not had to do that :-)

Also, if (like me) you wear hearing aids it's a requirement that you wear them for take-off and landing. When I completely lose my hearing (which will inevitably happen) I won't consider it discrimination that I can't sit there since it's entirely sensible that I be able to hear the instructions of the air crew in an emergency.
