    Fat shamed or fair enough?

Heard about this on the radio today, a large man was not allowed to sit in an emergency exit row due to his size.

"The CASA's website says passengers seated in exit rows must be "able bodied" and "appropriate" passengers who are able to help in an emergency.

Qantas' own guidelines online adds passengers sitting in the exit seats must not require the use of an infant or extension seat belt."

    Hi

Fine. You just have to be in reasonable shape. It's not just overweight that would be excluded but also pregnant, infirm, disabled in a way that prevents you from using the door handle (like no arms), being too young etc. I have often requested the exit door seat as you get tons of legroom and don't have to push back on the persons seat in front when they recline :-) Your given instructions on how to open the door and so far I have not had to do that :-)

Well said totally agree, it might seem unfair to him but you never know he might have a heart attack during an emergency and block the door. He might have not thought about that but the airlines obviously have for a good reason.

    Cheers

Note that most airlines now charge extra for the exit row seats. Note also that the row of seats forming the front edge of the exit row do not recline thus you sit rigid upright with back pain for the entire trip. Ask me how I know!

Fair enough , if he is ashamed of being fat he has either a mental issue or a weight issue , or I would think in this case both.

Im 95kg and considered medically obese , yes Im officially a fat bastard , but def don't need an extension seat belt.

More like the fat turd was upset because he was moved to a more squishy seat.

If he wasn't fat shamed before , he is now …. going on national tv and whinging .

He's not going to fly QANTAS again, wait till he gets on no star , then he will have something to complain about.

    Cheers Ean

All this guy’s done is give the rest of us fat bastards a bad name... I wouldn’t have got upset if I’d been told this - a little embarrassed probably, but that’s about it. He’ll cop a hiding on Social Media for this - hopefully he can ride that nastiness out and come out of this a better person and not think the world is fat shaming him at every turn.

He would have been asked very very politely. Stewards and hostesses are exemplary in their manners. They sre well trained to manage people and keep them as happy as possible in difficult situations.

It's pretty clear when booking that this is the case. He should have chosen an extra leg room seat that isn't a part of the emergency exit.
