How many Litres do you use to drive 100Km?

    G'day mates,

I posted the following post on:
    http://forum.australia4wd.com/index.php'showforum=1
But perhaps I would have receive information on what I was looking for had I poster here on the Land Rover fourm

I’m no expert on TD Discos but... I do have it on good authority that a TD Disco will use 9 -11.5lt per 100kms while a V8 petrol driven Disco will use 20-26lt per 100kms! Ouch! Even my 92 NC Ford Fairlane Ghia, automatic, with its 4.2 litre straight six uses less than half that amount of petrol to cover 100 Km!

I had to drive around to the other side of the bay today to pick-up an item, so I hooked-up a 7’x5’ trailer and off I went, the round trip was 176.08Km and took me three hours seventeen minutes to complete. The car used 18.27 Litres of petrol, or $25.01 worth for the trip. (on the way back petrol that had cost me $1.33.9 per litre on the outbound trip, three hours later cost me $1.36.9 per litre…you figure!)
So my Ford used 18.27 Litres of petrol to cover 176.08Km, about 50% of that distance in heavy stop and go traffic, in a Ford Fairlane Ghia with a 4.2 L engine!

This got me thinking on fuel economy for various vehicle, so I thought I would ask you what vehicle you drive, is it powered by Petrol, Ethanol, 100%, 80/20, 50/50, 75/25, Diesel or Biodiesel, and how much fuel do you need to cover 100Km in about 50/50 highway and city driving.

Your input could help people chose a 4x4 suitable for their needs.
I'll be interested in reading your input and fuel figures for you're 4x4.
For this to work properly...no BS mates

    Bill from Corio.

Tonight I posted the following on http://forum.australia4wd.com/index.php'showforum=1

    G'day mates,

I was hoping to get some "consistent" L/100Km figures to help me decide on a buying a 4x4...a 1992 V8 Range Rover Vogue on straight petrol.
The vehicle looks to be in pretty good condition and, according to the owner, has been well looked after...but the posted figures are... as to be expected by the various vehicles, loads and driving conditions... all over the place, so my little scheme will not work.
I had been dead-set on buying a LR Disco TDi but after missing three of them over the past months, all were in NSW, I decided to expand my search to include Disco V8's and RR V8's and I've found what looks to be a good V8 RR Auto' not far from me here in Vic'
I'll be looking at the RR this Saturday...have already agreed to buy it...if it's as good as in the pictures and... the mechanical side checks out.
We are retirees and I would only be doing local shopping trips with the wife and a weekly trip out to the Golden Triangle with the dogs for a bit of camping and metal detecting, no real heavy gear to lug around, only two small dogs, a metal detector, a four man tent and a bit of camping gear…and myself .

I was also considering buying a little Suzuki Sierra 4x4 soft top on eBay:
1992 Suzuki sierra 4x4 soft top 11 months rego, 4 inch lift kit, tow bar, brand new steering damper "old man emu" Mud tyres, new soft top Huge bullbar with electric winch, winch worth over $3000 Roll bar this four wheel drive is for the serious four wheel driver very small (fingernail size) minor dints in guards and slight discolour on bonnet only Red in colour Interior is original, rip in drivers seat only but other wise in very good condition Third seat with belts Water tanks Duel battery set up just needs second battery 12 volt power Snorkel Side steps 70lt fuel tank but awesome on fuel needs a new thrush washer and sump gasket that's it otherwise runs fine Can view in PARKES NSW PH 0427450442.

Tonight I called the lady selling the Suzie and asked her about all the gear and the “awesome on fuel” statement. I almost fell off my stool when she told me she got 400 Km on a 70L tank of petrol! Anyway I told her I did not need the winch or all the other gear on the Suzie and thanks but no thanks, so if any of you want a big strong $3,000 winch and all the other gear for $3,700, that includes the Suzie, you can give her a call.

If anyone can shoot me some info’ on a 1992, well cared for Automatic V8 RR Vogue, things I should look for when checking the vehicle out that could be the signs of problems before they arise, or things I should check before parting with my cash, and, if you know, how many L per 100Km I should expect to use “driving light”, it would be much appreciated mates.

Cheers and thanks one and all for the input, it’s much appreciated mates.

    Hello Kando,

I run a 93 V8 auto which lives in the country, we don't have the problems of the city here, like traffic or traffic lights to slow our progress, so my figure may be skewed, relatively: 16 litres / 100km

However, I had a new 95 with a 3.9 in Sydney which got thru 80 litres for just 320 km, but on long runs which it did often, showed 14 litres /100.

    Depends where you drive.

Some of the others here record much better figures than me, 'cause they really look after their LRs.

I had a look at ebay last night, good time to buy! There's plenty of RRs and Discos around for not much more than lunch money.

    Cheers, GQ

    G'day Bill,

As Quiggers has said.. it REALLY depends on the type of driving. The stories you here up around 26 Ltr /100k are either guys that run everywhere full noise.. or are in heavy sand or similar offroad.

My disco is the newer 4.0 ltr and I get around 19ltr/100 stop and go around town and about 15-16 on the highway. ( that said I do drive it hard)

My neighbor who has a 91 Auto 3.9 Rangie around town is a little better than mine about 18 and on the highway gets down to 14.

When you compare the numbers to your ford.... don't forget the ford 6cyl isn't trying to push 2 tonnes plus of car. it also is not full time 4x4 so not really a fair comparison.

It you are really concerned about fuel cost though..... go to a turbo diesel

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most

2015 TDV6 D4.... the latest project... Llams, Traxide, Icom 455, Tuffant Kimberleys and Mofos.... so far.
2012 SDV6 SE D4 with some stuff... gone...
    2003 D2a TD5...gone...
    2000 D2 V8...gone...

Getting on avg 10lt per 100 from tdi disco on normal diesel fuel.
Best achieved was 8.5lt per 100 that was on a rare week that i didn't go up the beach.
Worst week was 12lt per 100 that included three days on stockton beach and was towing a trailer on the sand(not all the time though).
Nearly all my driving on road is a mixture 50/50 in and out of town and i do around 1200k's a week.
By the way Bill was it you who said you can make biopetrol? if so how the hell do you do that. I'm sure lots of people would be interested.

    Hi

    Do you run Diesel ?

I run a 2.2L 4 cylinder manual day to day and only get about 9.5L/100

Just wondering if it was time to change my daily ride to a defender with those kind of figures.

    G'day Wortho,
As you run a TDi you should be talking BioDiesel, not BioPetrol BioPetrol is just another name for Ethanol and, with a proper converter fitted in your MPFI car you can run on straight petrol, straight ethanol or a mix of ethanol and petrol, you simply flip a switch for whatever fuel you're running on. The switch is similar to the LPG switch in a gas/petrol conversion where you flip over from petrol to gas or gas to petrol...but you only have the one fuel tank...no extra tank involved.
There are also a couple of other pretty simple but very important items you need to know about your vehicle! You need to know which injectors are fitted in your vehicle, you need to know if the Ohms at the injectors conectors are High, Medium or Low.
(High Impedance: 14-16 OHM, Medium Impedance: 12 OHM, Low Impedance: 2.2-2.4 OHM)
You also need to know which injector Connector Type is used, the Bosch EV1, Bosch EV6, Delphi, NipponDenso or the NH1 Connectors.
Everyone would think the local car factory that builds the vehicle, or the workshop that has the franchise to repair your vehicle would be able to give you this info' in two minutes flat! No So!
For instance, when I contacted the Ford factory here in Geelong to enquire which injectors they use in the 1992 Ford Fairlane Ghia, vin # xxxxxxx, the technecian told me: We use Ford injectors!
When I pointed out the fact that Ford did not manufacture injectors for their range of cars, they purchased them from other manufactures!
He stated that that was news to him! (How do these guys get their positions?) Anyway, I found that the 1992 Ford Fairlane Ghia uses Bosch injectors by stripping out one of the injectors from the car.
There's quite a lot more to cover on running a car on biopetrol and as it's almost 3am I need some sleep, if you're interested, PM me.
I'll dig out some info on LR RR injectors and post it here.

    cheers

    Bill

2000 Rangie Vouge - trip computer says 13.5l/100km

    2001 V6 Freelander - from around 11l/100km

I am currently driving a 2005 Rangie Sport supercharged V8, very nice and the trip computer says 16.5l/100km but the owner is a lead foot and I have not reset the computer so my comsumption will be better. My Rangie (2000 Vogue) was his last vehicle and when we got it, the trip computer had his comsumption at 17l/100km

Our 2000 Troopy 4.2 diesel non-turbo. Did a test up the Newel last year. At 90kph (cruise control) 10l/100km, at 100kph 12.5l/100km - mind you it has the areo-dynamics of 2 bricks. Average for us is around 12l/100km day to day running.

Most of our driving is on the open road at around 100kph.

Currant ride is the <span style="font-size:36pt;line-height:100%">Navara d40</span> 2.5l TD (keep it small so as not to offend the LR owners hehehe.

just did 5000= k's in 2 weeks and got between 9.5 and 10.5 per 100, am stoked with that.

Old disco 3.9l I used to have would use 80l and return about 350k's around town, and 500 to 550 on long trips
I found the disco to like the premium fuel better and always got better figures when I used it
There are two types of people in this world, good and bad. The good sleep better, but the bad seem to enjoy the waking hours
