they used to "scrub" it before it went into the laudertun.
it was mixed with some sort of lye , maybe sodium hydroxide or similar , I remember the process well , because after cyclone Tracy , everything there was done manually , and there was a young koori guy who mixed it and would get splashes on him and his skin had white spots on it....back in 1975 no shirt , but he did wear safety glasses. I think he wore a face mask , a la 2021 as well.
