    Tractors. tractors, tractors....

Today was the annual local tractor run. This is where people gather in a group and drive a lot of tractors over a route to raise money for charity. This year it was for cancer care.
There was well over a hundred tractors involved. They ranged from the high tech stuff to restored vintage. I tagged along behind in the series 111. No one objects as after all in it's day the series 111 was a glorified snazzy tractor. Today however tractors are a lot more snazzy and glorified than the series 111 ever was.
Anyway being June 2 it was a brisk morning. There was a bit of a wind, a little on the cool side and er, well, you guessed it...it rained. The people I felt sorry for were those driving the tractors that had no cabs. At least the series 111. has a cab and a heater.
Progress was leisurely. Sometimes when we came to a flat stretch with a bend I could see the convoy stretching for miles ahead. Sure there was a little disruption, there were some fumes but it was all in a worthy cause. Every so often the convoy was broken and sections stopped to let traffic by. Lots of onlookers and supporters at various places along the route. One crowd of children had a cardboard banner saying "Go Grandad Go". He was probably one of the hardy ones driving without a cab.
Of female entrants, yes there were a few (I think). Before it kicked off I was sitting on the bumper of the series 111 taking in the ambience (there is a lot of ambience from a hundred or more tractors) when a couple of females (not 100% sure about this) passed by and waved to me. Normally one would be flattered if two passing females waved in one's direction. Now these are the type of women who if you broke down in the Simpson desert you would be delighted to see coming over the horizon. One could have happily lifted your Defender up by the front bumper while the other removed your wheel complete with 235/85/16 tyre with one hand while holding a can of Fosters in the other WITHOUT spilling a drop of it's precious contents.
Anyway good "craic" as we say over here and I had no difficulty in keeping up with the tractors.
Unfortunately owing to a recent stomach bug attack (mentioned in another post) and still not 100% I was unable to stay for the entire trip.. or attend the after tractor run dance. Probably just as well with the aforementioned two "females" on the prowl.
    Roll on next year.
Didn't bother taking photos as they would be just like the photos from the last tractor run I posted.

    Tractors

I often purchase the U.K. magazine ,’Classic Tractors ‘, and most editions feature a tractor run, some long trips others just a village to village tour, all wonderfully supported. In the next few months I shall keep an eye out for a rascal in a landie sporting a roll of toilet paper on the wiper motor .(. If there is a pun there ,it may be intended )

As an old farmer, I am attracted to any mention of old tractors , I still have two David Browns,a 1949 Cropmaster, and 1964 DB 950 implematic . The dual seat cropmaster would have been ideal for giving one of your female best friends a lift, so Spud next time you are on a road run , give me some months notice, I will drive the old Cropmaster overland .... might be a bit tricky as Tassie and Ireland are both , well,......islands , then you could give the aforementioned lassie a ride.

Mention tractor, in anything above a whisper, and it will draw Dave out of the woodwork.

    Thanks for this thread, Spudfan.
It made me remember these photos I took at the Goomeri Land Rover 70th get together. These two were on their way back from a tractor gathering in Gayndah, Qld, to Carseldine, a suburb of Brisbane.
Approximately an 800 kilometre return journey. You have to like the camper trailers, too.

Now that is what I call dedication.
As an aside to the tractors, I never fully got the idea of "celibacy". Now having witnessed the two "females" mentioned in my post, I feel I could right a definition fit for the Oxford English Dictionary.

We were in Ireland in late June last year and saw a bunch of tractors heading to a tractor gathering on the way from Longford back to Dublin, although my main memory of Irish tractors is of 150HP New Hollands doing 30KM/H with a big trailer on the back and expecting to not have to slow down while the silly Aussie tries to get the renta-thrash off the road

Yep I know how you feel. Today I got stuck behind a large Massey and trailer. The Massey actually had mirrors fitted so the driver knew I was behind in the series 111. When he did eventually did turn off he must not have read the handbook that came with the fancy Massey as he obviously did not know where the indicator stalk was.
Yet last weekend I was in the series 111 at the tail end of at least 100 tractors and well err... a good time was had by all! Isn't life funny.
