    Price of lost keys...

I was having a whinge about the co$t of replacement remote fobs, some later models with 'non-replaceable' batteries.
Last year I bought (evilBay) a replacement for SWMBO's Magna, $80. Today, the replacement is $25 for aftermarket, or $49 "re-furbished" which appears to be a new case around a 'genuine' PCB.

What started the conversation was the Father-in-Laws old-ish Mercedes priced at and coming from Germany, $650 to $850.... which I thought was a bit cheeky...

But today all was put into perspective, when I learned a Range Rover one ( <2 years old model...) bit the owner for....

    $2,500 from a local dealer.
    - The son-in-law of the story-teller is of Anglo-Saxon origins, hence his blind devotion to the marque, and said raconteur had NO sympathy for him, he being of more modest means and drives a 101% reliable '80 Series'

Funny the conversations one has when lining up at a Coffee Van.

Seriously, how can they justify even a quarter of those prices ? Most if not all operate on the 303mHz band so it ain't esoteric technology. $50 to $80 around 6 years for Genuine is fine, but....

Not long ago I bought a small colour TV from K-mart for $80. What should a key fob the size of a 50 cent piece cost in comparison? $1.50? $2.00?

Interesting...... a non-genuine key fob for a 2004 Nissan which the owner can self program via ignition switch procedures is $17.50.

I understand that thieves of modern cars now prefer to break and enter a person's home to steal the car keys if they can.

    KEYS

When I was working a few years ago, we has a customers residence burn down - including the car keys - a Peugeot- & he couldn't move it until then factory made new keys, it took 3 weeks (after the 2 weeks it took to prove ownership as he lost the paperwork in the fire). From memory it was around $900.
The thieves find various ways to get a vehicle.
My sister in law just has a friend lose a Subaru she was selling, it was from a semi rural property & the guy was dropped off at the gate & walked up, asked if he could hear the engine running, sat in the driver seat, closed the door & took off. It was found burnt out a few days later.. Still waiting on the insurance company to decide.

We bought a Jap import Freelander 2 in NZ last year that only came with 1 key fob. The local dealer quoted $650 for a replacement. I bought 2 fobs from ebay for around $60 and got one of them programmed and the emergency keys cut by a local locksmith for $150.

Someone's making a good profit you would think.
