The average a farmer was getting for the extra 10 cents per litre for supermarket milk worked out to be 2 cents per litre overall

China is 10 million tonnes short on pork because of swine flu
Price of all meat is going to go up to meet chinas shortage
Maybe the dairies can start selling there animals for meat and stay in business

One way for farmers to get there fair price for milk

I dropped into dairy friends of mine on the weekend.

Although they are with Norco and have recently been advised Norco are giving them an increase at the gate. Sadly it’s not covering the extra cost of the drought but it was welcomed given they didn’t ask as they are contracted.

If their Norco branded milk goes to Coles it works out better for them than is it goes to Woolworths......

They also said they’d be surprised if the 10c increase on the coles and Woolworths mild was being passed on in full to the farmer.

I buy the $3.40 milk.

As we only shop once or twce monthly we get the $1 a litre longlife milk by the carton.
However ALL of my meat is bought locally and often directly from the farmer.

I only buy premium brand milk, usually Pauls full cream. Just prior to TC Yasi, I purchased the last four litres of milk available in Coles Innisfail; 1 x Dairy Farmers FC, 1 x Coles brand FC. They were placed beside each other in the well cranked up fridge at home. The coles one froze!
I've also noticed, of late, that Woolworths no longer stock the variety of options that they once did, eg yogurt is now only offered in their own brand and Yoplait.

Grew up in dairying country and used to relief milk, I know how much hard graft is involved so always have bought premium brands. While I understand every dollar counts to a lot of families it does frustrate me that the majority just don’t have a clue about how hard the $2 milk the stupermarkets sell make it for our farmers. 🙁

Why - the farmer does get any more than the cheap milk and all the extra money just lines the pockets of the middlemen and the retailer.
