As a Geelong supporter I can only agree with you ( The Cats were loosely linked ) . When I saw the head of the AFL and the Prime Minister of Australia stand together and announce this garbage I was appalled. They offered no evidence, just smear and innuendo.
The thing that riled me utterly was that the players ( remember, we are talking about very immature people ) were told that what they were doing was not only legal, but sanctioned. How the **** would they know anything different? James Hird, who would be regarded by most reasonable people as a decent man, nearly took his own life over this crap. And then we find that the supplement was actually legal at the time!
There is a fine line to walk when talking about this, as it gets political, but I'm going to try. Said PM was in huge trouble in the polls. Said AFL head was a supporter, and was retiring, and the (W)ASADA stuff dominated the headlines, thus attempting to take the pressure off the then PM. Supposedly. It didn't work.
I still regard the Essendon Supplements saga as one of the most despicable meetings of sport and politics we have ever seen. And the Bombers ( who I hate.....
) were probably denied at least one flag, and had their reputation tainted possibly forever.
I said that I'm a Cat. I have no love for the Essendon Football Club. But you guys were royally shafted, 34 players were maligned and vilified, some lost their careers. A great player and decent man nearly lost his life; he certainly lost his good name. The AFL, then and now, should be seriously ashamed. Essendon needs an apology from all levels, and they need their premiership points reinstated. It won't make it right, just like a Pardon doesn't make things right for someone the State executes. but it might help in some way.
Go Cats!!
