Anyone caught out in yesterday's hail storm north of Brisbane
I decided that yesterday I would take my 1972 Peugeot 504 (that is in mint condition) for a run from Brisbane to Yandina to see some relatives.
I'd just rebuilt the motor so was itching to see how the car now performs.
I did not check the weather.
I left Brisbane at 12.30pm with the rain starting at the Caboolture turn off. The rain got heavier at Steve Irwin Way turn off then the small hail started.
This is when I started to panic as the traffic slowed. There were the few odd bangs on the roof from bigger hail. I was getting closer to Wild Horse Mountain where I flew into the BP garage and grabbed the best cover. Then it hit. Cars, motorbikes were diving for cover as hail belted down. There was a red Defender stuck out in it. The ceiling inside the Hungry Jacks collapsed and the rain poured in. I was trying to help others cover their cars.
It cleared after about 20 minutes where I continued north and saw the carnage of hail wrecking every car between Roy's Road intersection and the start of Sunshine Motorway. It looked like every car parked at the old Ettomogah pub was damaged along with the construction equipment.
I returned home coming past this section at about 5.30pm and there was glass and plastic car bits everywhere. Along with dozens of tilt trays picking up smashed cars. Thankfully I seemed to have survived the ordeal without a mark on the Peugeot. I was very lucky.
Anyway, in all my life I have never experienced anything like that. It really pays to keep an eye on the weather - even if BOM may go overboard on their predictions.
