Possibly because the flies' maggoty offspring have now consumed all that is available from whatever corpse was in your vicinity, and have moved on to fresher pastures.

I used to win bucks in the pubs by getting a fly to empty a box of matches one by one.

Anyone seen it done? Anyone care?

    I can explain it.

    There is another explanation.

Last summer began normally with Bush/House Flies, Blow Flies and March Flies being in abundant numbers as per normal. But their numbers began to quickly reduce until there were none. It was surreal to spend a summer and autumn not having to swat at them when outside. No flies trying to get in the house also seemed like a bonus.

Another development was at night. With the yard flood lights on there were no insects or beetles attracted to them. European Wasps however were present.
Now no flies sounds like great news and a less hassled life outdoors but in reality it is a tragedy in the making. Why? The loss of all flies and insects is a disaster for all bird life, particularly for the native birds in our forests who, being territorial, starve. The cause of their demise is the European Wasp. They target every living thing for food, eliminating them as a species in that area. I have labelled them the “Ultimate Invader”. Far worse than other imports.

If small insect eating native birds do find food the wasps interrupt their reproduction process by killing and eating newly hatched chicks. Euro Wasps can and do drive off all scavenging predators aka foxes and wild dogs from any animal carcasses so a fluttering parent wren is no match for them. Similarly for deer hunters. If the Wasps arrive at a carcass the venison is lost to the hunter because the Wasps take aggressive possession of the carcass.

With our winters not being cold enough o kill off the Euro Wasps they prosper and their numbers increase.

Had any bushfires near you? Burning reduces the numbers of insects, including flies and mosquitoes.

It’s been months now and no fly’s

The wife cranked up the slow cooker this morning
Doors and windows closed all day
Open the front door this afternoon
    Bloody flys
Where the hell they come from has got me ****ed
Every bloody winter the wife insists on slow cooking
    And the flys love it

Swatted them all before dinner and more just seem to appear
    Any ideas
