Sharmy, your dad's uniform looks similar to my dad's, who was in the Royal Navy, or Real Navy as he called it.

I remember reading an article in the readers digest many years ago written by a US navy captains wife who said her husband told her that while he was at anchor adjacent to a royal navy ship during the latter part of WW2, the Americans launched a new ship that made them one ship bigger than the RN. He thought he would have a crack at the RN captain and sent a message " how is the worlds second largest navy going today " an answer came back "not bad how is the second best"

The RN blokes used to refer to the Merchant Navy as the Grey Funnel Line.
It's all a bit parochial really, as both navies had an equally hazardous role to play, each being an equally sized target, but one couldn't shoot back.

I'm a bit grumpy, as the wind has come up and made fishing a tad difficult. I have had to bring 'Plan B' in to play!

And the one that couldn't shoot back lost the most personnel of any service. My uncle survived a few sinking but was advised to take up smoking, so they got him eventually.

My uncle was a radio op on a merchantman on the Murmansk convoys. He borrowed a revolver from my dad. He said that the door to his cubby used to jam when the ship rolled ( all the time on that run ) and he didn't want to drown if the ship sank.....
