There were at least three tanneries in that area in the 1950's plus the scour. Didn't they pong!!! I am wryly amused by people who build new homes in a greenfield estate right next to a steel works, tannery, airport, motor racing track etc. already well established and the new residents then complain vociferously and form committees to agitate for removal of the problem elsewhere or to close it down. Existing amenity should be taken into account when issuing development approvals and building permits. The new residents should be firmly told that they knew about the activity, moved there willingly, and to cop it sweet.
