Where? - fire at the airport is out/under control and the fire down at the bottom of the ACT near where the C130 crashed has been there for a while now as have the fires at the south of Namagi National Park - in the ACT but still a long way from Canberra, though the smoke came back yesterday.

I had a good illustration this morning of the variation in the severity of the fires, even within a relatively small area.

I'm sure envee will be aware of the area I am talking about.

I went for my regular Tuesday morning paddle starting on the Tuross River at the highway bridge and headed up Bumbo Creek.

Having seen the map of the fire affected area, I fully expected it to be quite depressing and was concerned about what might have happened to the sea eagle's nest high up in a tree right beside the creek.

However, there were quite a few places along the creek where it was only the smell of smoke that showed that there had been fire nearby.

In many places trees beside the creek were untouched. Usually that was because behind those tree was a strip of green paddock separating them from the surrounding bush.

Under some trees in the middle of paddocks surrounded by a hundred metres of green grass, leaves or dead grass had burned. It seemed that embers were igniting anything that was flammable. What probably saved the trees on the creek bank was that the grass right on the edge was so green that in a lot of places the embers had no effect.

The sea eagles' nest was untouched.

Well the Orroral Valley Fire has made a break for Canberra with the SW winds pushing it along. Is just about to come over the mountains to the south. The RFS have to cautious and have advised Tharwa residents that it is too late to leave but Tharwa residents have indicated there is no reason to leave just at the moment as the fire has not come over the mountain as yet.

None of the southern burbs of Canberra are under threat but some embers may get blown there overnight.

If the fire comes up the Murrumbidgee River Corridor things might get interesting.

Oh - this fire was started by an Army helo landing in grassland and the heat from its spot light set the grass on fire.

Three of these are filling from Coila Lake, passing over my house and working on the Potato Point fires. Yesterday they filled from Tuross Lake. I'm guessing that they decide which lake to use based on wind direction.

I notice the specs quote SHP rather than BHP. I believe that means that the quite impressive figure of 1,600 SHP is better than 1,600 BHP because it is measured at the prop shaft and includes losses in the gearbox.
