Not sure what class of vessel the Russian is. It isn't festooned with aerials, like the intelligence gatherers who followed us in the Indian Ocean were. Not heavily armed either , but it has a good turn of speed. Patrol vessel? Ocean going mine sweeper? The Russians seemed the aggressors, fun and games on the deep blue.

USS Farragut was involved in “The battle of the Coral Sea” 1942: so is it Navy tradition to continue the name? I know RAN has had two Sydney and two Australia , did not you sailors get confused?

Very confused about closing time, normally. But, in similar fashion to the RAE, we " built a bridge " and got over it. My cousin was a Sapper, a Tunnel Rat in Vietnam. I have the utmost respect for the Army Engineers.

Hobart is now V3 but a very cool destroyer still, Adelaide on the other hand is now a HUGE Helicopter carrier with many other roles from my frigate FFG type. My fav still living is a museumI did server on another ship as well. A Sydney suburb which is now a Anzac class

To build tradition, and foster esprit de corps among ships companies , ships names were reused in later generations. This was adopted from the Royal Navy practice. The Attack class patrol boat I served on, Ardent, was named after a British ship from the Napoleonic wars. [some of us thought she was built then, too.]The USN named one of their WW2 cruisers after HMAS Canberra, sunk at Iron bottom sound, by the Japanese. Some unkind souls say that was because Canberra was torpedoed by an American destroyer in the panic and confusion that night. But I digress.

When I was a kid I spent a few days as a guest on the Attack class Barbet. For a 13 year old it was a cool few days. Around 1972 or 73?

Thanks for all that info Bob, now another query, an ex RN cobber , after I told him I had been to Scapa Flow ,said that there are two fighting ships although sunk are still in commission .

He said every year sailors would dive down and attach a new ensign to the Jack Staff, I think he said the Ark Royal .. . .. ? and the USS Arizona ? in Pearl Harbor.

Has the RAN any ships like that ? HMAS Sydney ?
