Reading this morning's hysteria about the delta strain in Sydney and how it can be transmitted by "a chance passing" leads me to wonder how much of this is media hysteria brought on by the capture of a couple of people passing on CCTV and how much is real. If you look at events like the Crossroads Hotel cluster where one Victorian traveler gave it to 56+ people the current outbreak looks a little tame. I'm not doubting the increased transmissability of the Delta strain but its almost like the media want a super spreader event so they have some news to report...

The Caloundra vax hub run by Qld Health was packed, with long lines, 24 vax bays going fulltime and the car park still packed at 4pm, when police had to shut the gate so they could finish by 5pm. You had to register on the online app while standing in the queue to save time. No sign of vax hesitancy at all. This is how a vax program should operate with plenty of vax doses.
The government has itself to blame over it's 'abundance of caution' changing of recommendations.
And even when people (like me) who have a pragmatic view make choices, regardless of odds/statistics it is always 50/50 for each of us as individuals that do anything whether its taking a vaccine, medications or crossing the road, you either end up on one side of the figures or the other.
So 2 dead in 3.8 million astra jabs might be 'statistically low' compared to other ways people die every day but it is 2 people who took a 50/50 chance that day in their lives and ended up on the wrong side.
I would have quite happily gone ahead and taken the queensland vaccine that was canned because of it's false HIV positives if the government wasn't so sensitive about public perception.
And I had the astra with no qualms because of my own fact finding ignoring media and peoples opinions.
Having made that decision it was my turn then to play 50/50 and find out if I was going to end up on the 'good' or 'bad' side of the odds.
Odds and statistics mean crap, 1 in a million chance or whatever means diddely, you either win or lose the bet, come home or don't.
The Wagners have said they could build a mining camp-style quarantine camp at their Wellcamp Airport near Toowoomba in about six months, and then lease it to the Qld Govt to run, just as quarantine hotels are also privately owned, but nothing can happen unless the federal government allows repatriation flights to land at Wellcamp, which is already approved for international freight flights. Toowoomba has more hospital beds than Darwin, I read, so that's not a problem.
We should have quarantine camps /new arrivals hostels / catastrophe accomodation or whatever name they come up with anyway for multi purpose use.
Pandemics, floods, bushfires, illegal and legal immigration, refugees. There is always a need to house help or segregate and facilities in every state should be considered.
You can house illegal refugees in a decent environment and even teach them english to then help with their own processing.
You can house arrivals in a quarantine situation as we need to now during a pandemic or as a matter of procedure.
You can move a mother or father and their kids into a safe environment in an emergency (natural disaster, prevent homelessness, fleeing from domestic violence etc)
So far we have muddled our way through on the health front and threw lots of money around during last years mess, but politicians are still being self preserving self serving in their mindsets.
States making their own decisions on the fly with sudden lockdowns and border closures and a lack of leadership from the feds so they don't take responsibility and hence any criticism.
The supply from the pharma companies is out of any governments control but the distribution of the vaccine should have been worked out the minute we knew it was a goer last year and then all that we needed to tweak was to get what we could out to people as it came in. Not finger pointing and blame game and states responsible for this and feds for that. One overall unifying distribution plan.
Quarantine camps will not be misspent money. My engine hoist doesn't get used every day to justify it's purchase. It is there when I need it, but it IS there when I need it.
There is a lot of pressure being applied to the vaccination fence sitters who are resisting having the needle. Let's be clear here.....that is their right. The resistance to getting vaccinated can actually increase in proportion to the increasing pressure applied.
Why are people resisting? It may well be..and I think it is the case is that it is a yes/no decision so a conservative position of no is adopted. To overcome this situation give people a choice. Allow them to choose which vaccine to have and it is no longer a yes/no decision but a which vaccination will I have. Having options changes the choosing dynamic and resistance fades because by giving people a choice they will weigh the options and choose one which they think best suits them. They are in control of their own destiny rather than a talking head on the TV telling them what to do.
Sydney Quarantine station operated from the 1830s until 1984 but I reckon it would have been pretty quiet in the 20 years before it shut

Detention centres/refugee processing
Hotels are now distributed quarantine camps.
Howard Springs doing a new role .
I am musing about forward looking situations as we are building up the benefits of hindsight.
Even a change of air conditioning/air flow management in the building codes to take into account what is being learnt from our current situation.
As I said, call them hostels or whatever but times are changing and whether it is large centralized or small more distributed accomodation they can serve a multi function role.
