We left in 1983. I have wonderful memories of Darwin, it was a different posting to any thing else. Among the fuel tanks at the northern ? end of the wharf was an old air raid shelter. Stones from the property were used to wall in the kitchen, with a low wall around the lounge area. No windows. He laid another slab for a piggery, had a diesel generator for power. He got his fuel courtesy of the RAN. Every time a fuel tank was cleaned there was an amount of sullage in the bottom of no use to any one, and he who shall be nameless used to bring his old series 2 land rover in with a couple of 44's on the back, and fill them with sullage. All he needed for fuel, he said. Of course the whole pigs and legs of pork he left as a thank you went over well.Quote:

He wanted to get a licence to sell pork in Darwin, but had to upgrade his piggery. So he wrote the lot off, and he and I loaded up a truck and dropped it off. He got his licence. One day I'll talk about how a mate and I used to drive to Blacks Forest and shoot brumbies for dog meat, but that's another story. [biggrin]
Who can afford it? Government won’t (and probably can’t) and private enterprise certainly won’t see the value in it as far as making a dollar - refineries and distributors are taking a hosing right now, which one of them would sink that sort of money into an infrastructure project like this at the moment?Quote:

We are a sitting duck when we don't carry enough supplies. An upside of Corona is that the Govt and public are keen for Aust to be more self sufficient. A little idealistic when we all want things so cheap that at that price they can only be made in China but surely we can do better than what we have to date.

The Metro mob apparently have some deal that they need to buy X amount per week/month whatever, hence why they have fuel so cheap at their stations.
It all comes from the one refinery, here in Yarraville.
If Metro don't think they can sell/use it all, they then contact the indie fuel companies(like my mates mob) and get them to fill up on Metro's account ... so that metro get their quotas.
Far out, still paying $1:33 for unleaded in Ballina and Lismore but paid $1:00/l tonight in Chindera.
