RIP Sir Tom - you were an inspiration.

FFS, why shouldn't the family give him one last holiday, risk or not. What your saying is that someone who is in their 90s and who happily smoke and drink, should give it up, for their health!
    Why?

I can see where the poster is coming from. It seems irresponsible to fly a 100 year old person all the way to the West Indies, especially during COVID. Having said that, I haven't seen it reported any where that it actually happened. And yes, it's none of our business, anyway. As said, it is what it is, no amount of on line chat will change a thing.

In the USA, where testing rates compared to infection rates are so bad that 5-20% of tests are positive, it is well worthwhile.

Perhaps this is the explanation. Add to this that in most places in the USA you will have to pay for a test and wait 1-2 weeks for the result (here it is typically free and results within 24hrs), and it clearly has a place.
For a rapid tester - 96% is impressive.

I agree with what you are saying - and it certainly would not be a replacement for a PCR test.

But for pre-screening people flying interstate from low risk states, followed by self-isolation and a PCR test would perhaps be a way of keeping the borders open.

And yes - talking about WA and VIC whose go to response now is to slam shut the border.

No problem with a holiday - but really flying a 100yo half way around the world in a major pandemic - FFS.

In the Australian situation it would be useless except as 'pandemic theatre'. With the infection rate in any Australian state being well below 0.1% (probably below 0.01%), a test with 96% accuracy is providing no useful information at all, and providing either a false sense of security or a lot of false positives. If you have a plane load of 100 passengers, then you could have up to four infected passengers or up to four refused boarding because of a false positive. Can you imagine how that would go down?

    Best Drive through

This is cool NY style vaccinations. We were doing flu vax drive up and jabs last year. Funny as and safer. Like to bet we will be doing so again shortly here for flu and another type happily We do ask people to hang about for 10 minutes to double check no adverse reactions. ( Noting we have never had one )

Quarantine stuff up again! Victoria fail

Fire fighter, security........ Not having a go at the guards or staff Management is pathetic in my view.
Everyone Working in an exposure site should require 14 days offline is needed to avoid this. Several dozen doctors and nurses I know who did work in treating Covid 19 patients all resolved themselves from their families to help ensure they did not harm people they love. This is frustrating and honestly foreseeable.

"Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said testing indicated the man "probably had a high viral load", meaning he expected his close contacts to potentially become cases. But Mr Andrews said "there's no need for people to panic" after the positive case, adding Victoria now knew how to get on top of outbreaks"

We didn't have effective controls in place from a very well know/noted community risk! The comment "there's no need for people to panic" We will wait 14 days before I think that statement is anything other than rubbish or spin.

Vic back in mask and testing just as we got to 28 days free Mr Sutton "the man "probably had a high viral load"," then BUGGER

"the 26-year-old worker had attended a social function in his capacity as a volunteer firefighter."We have been through FRV and CFA have been contacting brigades, they have been doing deep cleaning, they in turn have been contacting their members, their staff as well as their volunteers," he said." A BUGGER plus

"From Thursday all of the 13 major testing sites in the south-east of Melbourne will open early at 8:00am with additional drive-through lanes added. Additional testing sites will open in Brighton and Monash University."

    Once more into the breach

No need to panic said the person in charge of the government that slam shut the border to Perth due to 1 local case.

Yes Victoria knows how to lockdown and implement a police state as well. Don’t panic....or stock up at home....there is nothing to see here.

Out for more dunny paper any one. We are likely to see cases I think. How well the containment works will be the one question we
    have to wait for. DOH
