Some suggestions such as Military bases and Christmas Island are clearly not suitable due to remoteness, lack of facilities or both.

I would have thought that Rottnest Island would be another ideal location but I've not heard anyone championing it, other than Andrew Miller.. I suspect there is a bit of Nimbyism going on here too as I'm sure state premiers would love for quarantine to be far away from capital cities, managed and financed by the federal government so they could get on with running their states and toss rocks at the feds every time someone got infected, I would if I was a Premier.

And FWIW I don't disagree with either of Bob's points but I wanted to explore the effect of a "heads in the sand" approach of closed borders over the longer term. Regardless of the reasons for Austraila remaining isolated there will come a day when as a country we are significantly disadvantaged by this approach and the rest of the world moves on. At the rate that the UK is vaccinating its population that point is looming over the horizon, the same with the US.

Why don't we just use Canberra? ? No one's going to break the rules and go there, might have a problem with runaways though

Right at the bottom end of the whole 'hotel quarantine' issue, is a problem with "The Narrative", and that is the dogma that transmission is via DROPLETS, not 'aerosol'. A droplet or three is impeded / stopped by a...... Mask. Therefore, Masking ain't ever going away....

But, if the heretics are correct, then aerosolisation is the villain, and masks lose their cachet. Oops. And aerosols weigh very little, so tend to hang in the air and float for tens of metres.

Exactly, in fact that formed part of a critical post yesterday about the A$500 million the govt was giving to the AWM for improvements. I did suggest to save cash & incorporate the additions as a Replica WW2 POW Camp with people (returning residents) inside & calling it " Living History"
