no such luck in AU ....

it is now becoming patently clear that, almost without exception, all the specialists in this field believe we cannot have a stable ecomomy without elimination, suppression simply isn't reliable enough as Vic and NSW are now showing us.

still too early to see if QLD has been dragged back into the mire by opening borders up again.

Tasmania must be expecting something as QLD is included with Vic and NSW in the no go list.
We probably would have achieved supression if Victoria had been competent enough to manage their quarantine. All current NSW community acquired cases originate from there......Oh well, maybe second time lucky(hopefully)

much easier to achieve in NZ due to size, population, etc etc.
i dont think elimination was every a realistic option
suppression just draws out the problem

going by the current infection rates, (and this data is wild), the US will be plague over in 12 months and returning to normal.
in aust, we're looking at 20-30 years.

The states which closed their borders seem to have achieved elimination, except for imported cases.
I read that Victoria had suppressed it, but it appears a new strain of the virus came in with international travellers, and then escaped.
The strain being identified in Victoria now is different to the strain which was being found in March, which has disappeared.
So we got very close to elimination nationally, but then a new strain was imported.
The pandemic worldwide has not even peaked yet and is still getting worse, so closing borders is going to be necessary for a while.

Being out amongst it every day in different locations of Melbourne for work show me different things from what the media portray at times.

So ... over the weekend I saw less than a dozen people not wearing masks: the compliance was astonishing. And the ones not doing so were the usual suspects.

But, when I open The Age online this morning I see a video of a woman vociferously arguing with cops and Bunnings staff about her right to not wear a mask. The reality is that she most likely went to Bunnings to provoke a confrontation which is why she was videoing it. But that's the news story, not the wide compliance.

It's also the case that other States have few non-Murdoch news outlets and the Murdoch press, from the Australian downwards, have been relentlessly negative towards the ALP in Victoria and Daniel Andrews in particular. As an example, in Queenland 14 out of 15 newspapers are owned by Murdoch. In those circumstances how balanced is the news likely to be?

Even in Victoria the Age's new owners - Channel 9 - have run a couple of stories in The Age that drew very angry responses from Age readers - one in particular claimed that Melbourne's ICUs were near capacity which was completely false, was contradicted by the content of the story itself and completely ignored Vic's surge capacity which has been installed over the last few months. Having wrongly claimed that Vic's ICUs were at capacity and ignored the surge capacity, a couple of days later they ran an article criticising the government for "wasting" money converting a floor of an empty hospital to a dedicated 85 bed coronavirus ICU to increase surge capacity! They were utterly inconsistent stories and they were pilloried for it: they were clearly just trying to be negative. A couple of days after that The Age's senior writers - not Channel 9's Sydney based management - ran a series of stories about how well-prepared Victoria was ..... not hard to see what happened there. Sadly that capacity is now being used.

Anyway, here's some of what's actually going on:

These are people queuing outside a fabric store in Brunswick to buy fabric to make their own masks - the queues were much longer earlier in the week. The delivery van has just arrived and is restocking the fabrics, as they'd sold out earlier in the week. And they're all wearing masks and they're all socially distancing. I suspect that they'd been told when the new supplies would be arriving which is why they were waiting.

30,000+ people in town makes the place a little bit bigger than an "Outback" village and Yes it is a Great little spot and Much better living here than living in some filthy City squished in like sardines
