Looking at the figures for NSW since the 15th of April they seem to have been bouncing along at less than 20 cases a day. A lot of effort has been put into tracing but suppression seems to be the best that they can do. Maybe if Victoria was to extend level 4 restrictions for another couple of months eradication might be achievable but that's a pretty big ask.

I think asking for the current lockdown to extend that far would pretty much cause bigger riots - the natives are getting restless, although I agree the way things are going, we could potentially get close to that if we stayed as is, but probably unrealistic given the economy in Melbourne is on its knees at the moment and it will be very interesting to see who can recover from this. Some reports are saying 1 in 10 businesses currently closed won't reopen - but that was just blurb on the TV, not sure where those numbers came from.

If they could achieve what NSW is managing and to keep the outbreaks small and controlled then that would be a next good step - but I wonder if the States are talking to each other at the moment - I would like to think they are, but it seems to be very much an 'Us and them' type of deal at the moment for some unknown reason - this whole thing has bought out the worst in people, and our leaders in all States are far from immune from this.

Other States seem to understand how to keep a lid on things and have some semblance of normality - I think everyone in Vic would be happy for that at the moment.

No one is happy with lock downs and similar.

Campus contagion

We have a choice to open and see our grandparents, parents and elderly get used as cannon fodder or be a bit patient for the vaccines which are possibly here early 2021 and not kill a lot of people. Have to add anyone with several health issues like diabetes and similar and any age are in the very high risk crew. I would love to go fishing, camping, holidays............ All that me stuff or be a bit more considerate for others?

While I’d love to be a smart-arse and throw stones at Victoria, I honestly believe that while the quarantine fiasco greatly increased the probability of it happening here, the fact the other states haven’t had a similar explosion yet could be equally attributed to luck as much as good planning.

I also think that watching what happened and how it happened here has provided a great deal of data on a better way to deal with localised outbreaks which should inform further reactions if it does get loose elsewhere. Witness the containment currently going on in Qld/NSW. There are plenty of mitigation’s being put in place that weren’t there the first time around.

With the case numbers on a relatively steady decline, I suspect Vic will be able to loosen up in another month or so provided people continue to play by the (quite draconian) rules.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said police were now investigating as to whether an offence had been committed."

I wonder if its time the privacy laws need a shake up plus. Vicpol looking for a twit that was not being reasonable yet he is able to jump on plane exposing hundreds I assume.

The reality is that all infections in Australia came from overseas, and it was the States who were receiving international flights that bore the direct risk - that means largely NSW and Victoria, and Qld to some extent. That means that the other States had already had their risks carried by the receiving/quarantining States, so they only had to deal with very small case-loads. SA, for example, had no international flights at all from March to June, and only one a week from then, so during that period the only risks they had was from people travelling to SA who'd been infected interstate, possibly by quarantine breaches. But even then there were outbreaks, like in Tasmania. So, it wasn't good management or even good luck, just that there were minimal infections there to start with.

The thing about the current lockdown in Victoria is that unlike the first time around, this time it's not the general community that's the risk - the infections are in very specific groups, workplaces and regions and the rest of us are and were doing the right thing. So, we are playing by the rules and it wasn't the general community that was the issue in any case. My office in the City has 700 staff and as far as I'm aware we haven't had a single case (with the possible exception of myself) either among staff or their families. But I saw some Deliveroo riders the other night sitting shoulder to shoulder on the footpath and I was really tempted to ask them to move apart. I saw some South American kids - probably language students - maskless and hanging out in the park, again tempted to tell them to comply with the restrictions everyone else was complying with. These are the groups that are behaving in risky ways, not the general community.

It still astonishes me how mask-wearing became pretty much universal here overnight, and how quickly people adapted to the restrictions. Just before Stage 4, I went to see my elderly parents - and Dad had acquired an IR temperature gun: anyone coming into their unit was getting their forehead temperature taken before they entered ...

I wonder whether it was the same ****wit that wanted to "get outta Town" a few weeks ago. Travelled by Car to the SA/VIc border & was turned back by SAPOL Rozzers. A few hours later he rocked up yet again, further north of the roadblock (I'm not sure if the Rozzers found him bogged or it was another bloke) He finished up getting done & was in the Adelaide Watch House at last count & been charged.


I hope they threw the book at him.
