daylight savings make more sense the further from the equator you are. qld and north WA dont really need it. SA, Vic, Tas, its essential imho.

Was out at Cannonvale at a property on the main road some years ago. Big veggie garden out front, puppy farm out the back.

Went to the front door with a couple of people and rang the doorbell, lots of shoes and thongs neatly arranged in the porch outside in pairs.

Hubby (who'd been in the big veggie garden) and wife (who'd been out back 'farming') showed up behind us at the front door.

Both then put shoes on and in we all went. Thought I'd seen everything weird that Qld had to offer right there and then.

And I don't understand how Queensland unilaterally deciding to be the odd one out means that every other State that managed to agree on DST is being un-Australian?

Edit: and sorry, why doesn't Queensland do daylight saving? Is there an actual, sensible reason?

Edit: a quick google reveals that a majority of the residents in the South- East of Qld (i.e., Brisbane) voted for it and it was opposed by people in electorates in the West and North. I had a bit of a laugh at Katter complaining about it still being light at 7.30pm - in the West of Victoria it's light until after 9.00pm and Horsham is way hotter than say, Mt Isa.
You should read your constitution. The border closure is legal under the Constitution. Ignorance of the fact is no excuse. Daylight saving? Qld gave it up in 1972. Why do we do it?

It is widely believed that Benjamin Franklin was the first to suggest the idea of daylight savings, way back in 1784, as a way for people to save costs by reducing their candle usage - however he proposed that people change their sleep patterns rather than the clock.
    Old Ben knew what he was about. Also, I doubt you have been North of the Tropic of Capricorn for any length of time. And yes there is an actual sensible reason. Democracy. The people of Qld voted against it. That's enshrined in the Constitution as well. You can read it here;

I've read the Constitution - in fact I have a couple of copies of it in my bookshelf - and I beg to differ: the border closures, as currently enforced, are unconstitutional and therefore illegal.

Sections 92 and 117 prohibit any such thing as a border closure or preventing free travel between States. There are likely exceptions for issues such as pandemics, but you'll note in the article below the emphasis that the experts place on State residence not being the link to being blocked from crossing. In other words, feel free to block me from crossing a border because I may have a virus, but don't block me because I'm not currently a resident in a particular State. And the latter is clearly illegal.

You'll note in the article below that in 1918 NSW and Queensland blocked everyone, including residents of NSW and Queensland, from crossing their borders until they'd completed quarantine and they didn't block some Australians and let other Australians through, which is what's currently happening.

Whilst there may be some doubt around the pandemic issue, the WA Premier's statement during the week that he was going to keep WA's borders closed for economic reasons is clearly and unambiguously illegal. And that's why he backtracked so quickly.

Actually, it's the other way around - the further you are from the Equator the longer the days in Summer. As you get closer to the Equator the difference between the length of days in Summer and Winter diminishes.

Hobart for example, has the longest days of any Capital city in Australia - because it's the furtherest South:

Curious Hobart: Does Hobart get the most sunlight hours of any state capital? - ABC News

On December 22 this year, the longest day of the year and summer solstice, the total time between sunrise and sunset in Hobart is 15 hours and 21 minutes.
That's compared with Sydney's longest day of 14 hours and 25 minutes.
And in Brisbane the longest day is 13 hours and 53 minutes.
"As you go farther north in the summer months, the days are not so long," Mr George said.

The real, practical issue is how far East you are.

Good for you. Most Australians would not have any idea what was in the Constitution. Just one thing. If it was illegal, wouldn't it be before the Courts now ? It's not, because the Federal Government knows it would have the same outcome as Clive Palmer , in W.A. And what is it with Victoria and NSW and this virus. I would have thought they, of all Australians, would like to ensure the rest of Australia was virus free, as much as it could be. Have a look around the World at the moment. Lock downs and panic everywhere, is that what you want? Or are you just beating the drum for some political agenda ? It's no surprise that the States with the strictest lock downs are the States with the best economies at the moment ,W.A. even has a surplus. It's curious that some Australians want to push the barrow for a system that almost guarantees a spread of infection.

Some people look at what is happening in the States where the people have done and continue to do the right thing by socially distancing and abiding by whatever quarantine procedures were and still are in place and as a result of this life has returned to almost normal once again and they Hate it that it isn't the same where they live.

The chat on Daylight savings made me chuckle. WA North to South is a LONG WAY plus. South coast is like Vic, North Like Darwin. Puting a daylight savings rule due to one part had me in stiches again. WA news during the 80s and 90s discussions about it were a hoot plus

On the cool way WA has shut the virus out. Bravo Zulu. The constitutional opinions are a bit like armholes We all have them

Hope we can follow WAs lead and eliminated it to 0. Not going to happen here with so many clearly out and some trying the life as before close up and stuff everyone else moves

The park near me had about 1000 to 5000 people moving about per hour yesterday. I walked the streets almost to my self to avoid the crowds. A lot who sat were smart, They sat in spots very distant from the usual gathering spots well way from the paths and tracks. Reports we have Zero cases in the area amazed me as a hospital nearby has several new cases. The nurses and staff at that hospital who were not provided top level PPE and told they could not bring their own N95 mask to work made me shake my head. Testing not positive now does not mean your not infected as going to be infectious and sick shortly after!
