I believe the major sticking point for Wellcamp is that it is proposed to be a for profit facility, with a private company having responsibility for governance. The workforce is proposed to be run in a similar way to FIFO mining camps. Who would handle a major outbreak is not clear, with Toowoomba hospital not capable of handling large numbers of COVID patients. The concept is a good one, There are a lot of the finer points to be worked out. Not to say it is unworkable, but the political will to make it happen is simply not there. Meanwhile Victoria puts forward the Mickelham pet complex as their preferred alternative facility. The 144 hectare site would be retrofitted with single story cabins to accommodate 500 airline passengers at a time, with the ability to upscale to 3,000 beds. The cost ? $ 200 million with $ 700 million for 3,000 beds. The federal government should build it and own it , like Howard Springs, say the Victorian Gov.

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

This article states we should go back to the future with quarantine and vaccines. In 1994, the Federal governments 78 year old vaccine manufacturer Commonwealth Serum Laboratories, was sold for $ 292.4 million. It is now worth $ 122 Billion. There are a number of things the private sector does very well, but up to the 80's and 90's, it was recognised that quarantine and vaccination of a population are not one of them. PM Billy Hughes knew in 1916 that Australia needed the capacity, and set up CSL as a government owned manufacturer, the first vaccine was used against the Spanish flu. Now the government has to work out a business plan and gov. subsidy to try to persuade privately owned CSL to make the latest vaccine, which no doubt will cost a heap.

The chances of more , and worse Pandemics in the future, are a given. Serious thought must be given for the public sector to take back vaccination of the population, as a priority.

Quarantine, vaccines policies of the past served Australia better (thenewdaily.com.au)

Some things are more important than money. Just ask Gunga Din.
