No self-service grocery check-outs for me! The store will take responsibility for correct scanning of my purchases and I'll contribute to the continued employment of check-out operators.
However I'll take responsibility for putting the correct fuel into my vehicle thanks.

Had a laugh at this because today in Devonport I used a self-service fuel pump on a forecourt with not a human in sight. Just pre-enter your card details enter a maximum fuel amount, pump until the amount is reached or the tank is full and drive away.
It was the second time I'd used one of these and I must say I didn't like it, because I don't like self serve in supermarkets either.
However, the diesel was 10 cents a litre cheaper than the Caltex next door, so I admit I put money ahead of principle in this case.
    My bad.

When I'm on my bike, I'd prefer paying at the pump.

For sure. Beats having to rip the helmet off (and glasses etc) for the sake of 5 minutes.

I once, when I was about 19, forgot to take my hemet off walking into a bank.
That got really exciting for a little while!

The ANZ bank I use have gone to self serve with no bank tellers , when they tell me to do it my self I just tell them I pay my fees I expect to be served & it is only going to put them out of a job. If they want me to do it my self I will go to a real bank. I notices the other day the NAB that I also use has also put self serve machines in side but still have one person at the counter to serve . As for the shops they a re wanting us to go bach to using mail order so they can just have one large wearhouse & close all there stores. This is not for me I like to see in the flesh what I am buying.

The ANZ charge for using a teller even if their machines are broken.
If one later complains then the charge may be reversed but you're hit with another fee for handling the query.

A few years ago Centrelink stopped sending out the annual Statement of Pension. I needed it to get my total taxable income so Mrs. (still working) could do her return. Waited and waited on the phone and gave up. So down to Stones Corner office I go. I worked out of there for a while way back. The greeter was a former Field Officer I worked with. He told me clients were now supposed to do it themselves on line. I told him you are public servants so find someone to serve me. A counter officer did it for me with bad grace attempting to talk me into doing it on line. My bank branch now has only two teller positions and only two tellers at busy times. Normally only one and they do all the enquiries once done by enquiries positions. So if someone is changing their insurance or placing or withdrawing a term deposit the queue gets longer and longer.

I feel for country people in some of the smaller towns and villages that once had several banks but now have one or none. The decline of businesses and services in the bush is quite sad. Winton had four banks. Now only has the NAB and in the former Commonwealth Bank building. There were once GM-H, Ford, Chrysler, IH, BMC/Leyland dealers there. No car dealership left. Central Motors was the long established Ford dealer but now sells small engines, quads, trikes, pumps etc and advertises Ford parts but carries little stock. Longreach had a full hand of dealerships and a large engineering and engine reconditioning works but now only has a combination Toyota/Ford dealer who only ever has one vehicle in stock.
