Norfolk Island food shortage creates " a very serious situation "

A lack of a regular shipping service has created the problem. The Island has no chook food, honey, rice, is short on cooking oil, and ………….There are no kegs of beer left!!!!

‘A very serious situation’: Norfolk Island experiencing ‘dire’ food shortage

I knew Kim Davies well when I lived there. We often had to meet, he was Manager, Norfolk Telecom and I was the manager of the international telcomms submarine cable station. We also had a number of meetings about the local radio station and TV transmitter as an ex-colleague of mine and I maintained both.

Does that explain the beer shortage, Ron? Odd, because I always took you for a red wine type of fellow.

I am led to believe there is only one radio station broadcasting, ie Triple J.

Must be good not to have all the commercial garbage.

wait, wait, wait......just getting some popcorn.

    Ok , ready now.

At close in the evening, we'd put ABC to air

For some peculiar reason, the NSW Central West (Dubbo) ABC radio breakfast also covers Norfolk Island, so we get weather and local politics etc details for Norfolk Id here!

I remember back in the 70's, when our ship was sailing to Hawaii , or just somewhere in the Pacific, occasionally the hand in charge of the radio broadcasts [ I can't remember what part of the ships system it was broadcast over]would find the radio Norfolk frequency, and we would listen to the broadcast. It was different, and broke the boredom of a long voyage, listening to Norfolk life, as broadcast.

I wasted 10 minutes reading the comments on the linked story. We had our honeymoon on Norfolk in 1999 before the local government went broke but even then it was a chore to get there, our outbound flight was cancelled and we had to buy two one way tickets. When we were there tourism was hugely assisted by the exorbitant sales taxes that Australia was subject to and most of the Main Street was occupied by duty free shops selling all manner of goods.
Then Australia introduced the GST and that 40% saving dropped to 10% and suddenly one of the tourist drawcards disappeared.
    Then the Government went broke

The method of transhipping goods of the beach was a tourist attraction but unlikely to last in a world of OH&S regulations. The Australian Government spent $17 Million dollars on upgrading Cascade Pier but the problem seems to be a lack of suitable commercial shipping prepared to service the island.

According to the news on the radio a few minutes ago, the shortages are causing major issues in part due to the increase in tourism on the island. (This is talking about the last couple of years, not further back when the GST was introduced)

I just had a look at Google Maps and Cascade Pier doesn't seem to have changed since I was there in 1990-93
