    Border Security (TV)

I watch Border Security and wonder how blokes like young Vlad put up with some of the people they deal with. I don't know that I'd be able to maintain my cool with some of them.

It's amazing how many complain that they are being unfairly treated and that they shouldn't have to put up with it because they are not terrorists or drug smugglers, they are Australian, etc.

I look at and listen to some of them and my wife and I mutter to each other "Book 'em, Danno". Last week had a bird who was really going off with lots of foul language. Why wasn't she charged with offensive behaviour? I found her very offensive. I was glad that they took her off to hospital for a cavity search.

I watch the show and I keep hoping that someone will charge the worst of them. When it comes to trying to bring in foodstuffs, etc., the worst seem to be the Asians.

I also like the NZ version, Border Patrol. Oddly enough (well, maybe not oddly), over there the worst seem to be Asians as well.

I note the Americans are always wanting a lawyer.

Vlad (and your colleagues in Customs, AQIS, and the AFP), I salute you.

Good thing that the Warrigal Tribe were under resourced when Arthur Philip's fleet arrived in 1788

I note that a prison in Qld is named after a bloke called Arthur Gorrie. I knew Arthur back in the early 60s 'cos I bought a lot of my aeromodelling stuff from him at his store in Woolloongabba. Arthur used to sponsor a model-making competition at my high school (Salisbury State High School) and I won one of those comps in 1964 for my flying model of a B25 Mitchell twin-engined bomber and I still have the trophy. It is one of two trophies I have won that I haven't thrown out - the other is for being Dux of Queensland Squadron, RAAF Air Training Corps in 1964 - as Cpl Beckett, 18 Flight).

I have occasionally wondered if Arthur would have liked to have had a notorious maximum security prison named after him. Perhaps it is appropriate that the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre is at Wacol - the suburb where I used to attend 18 Flight ATC.

    Aw shucks Ace, thanks.

Yes we certainly do get some very VERY irate people from time to time. And it's mostly when they are in the wrong, and know it, that they become irate.

    I've heard it all....

"I'm Australian...." (so? I treat every one equally)

"You just picked me because I'm (insert race, religion, nationality, whaterver here) "

"You people ought to be catching drug smugglers instead of charging me for alcohol..." (Yep, and if you cooperated we'd be able to get back to that so much the quicker).

"Whaddaya mean it's illegal. They told me in (insert country or shop here) that it would be fine to bring back to Australia". My advice - check with CUSTOMS in AUSTRALIA. Everyone else either doesn't know or is trying to sell you something.

And I've copped more than my share of extremely vicious and personal abuse, too.

Now on a COMPLETELY different topic (I think a lawyer would advise me to say that).....

Remember when Australia used to kick ar$e, and not kiss it ?!
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Yep good on ya Vlad. Tough job. We gat a little bit of the same with the security side of our job, but no where near as much as you guys. I thought the NZ border patrol was a bit harsh when they just about fined most of the passengers on a Qantas flight after they were given an apple on the plane and most just put it in their bag. The crew should be reminding passengers that all fruit or food served during the flight can not be taken off the plane or into NZ. Flying into Adealide or Perth from interstate I reckon every flight it has been advised of this on landing.

I find it amusing when the Navy shoot across the bow of the illegal fishing boats, and they try to make a run for it.

Must send an email to the Admiral
We could save money by firing one shell instead of 100 bullets
