The model in the ad is an AP 5 or 6. The AP5 was released in 1964 and was the last to offer push button auto. That narrows your mates car down to AP5, as it was the first ute (Wayfairer).

The cars in that ad sheet are all AP6s. Far superior to the Holden and Falcon offerings at the time - better build and much better engines - and you could get a V8 in the AP6 where neither Ford or Holden were offering V8s.

Yes we had a new AP6 in late 1965.

I had an AP6 225 slant 6 in early '70s with an Impala, straight floor shift. Thought I was the bees knees.

I reckon the one in the ad is an AP5. There was a bloke dining at my local last year and he had an AP5 sedan with the 273 V8 and a vinyl roof. Looked sooo good.

I did not think the AP5 had the V8 as it was released with the AP6 - the top vehicle is a base model so has a 225 (the trim on the front mudguard where it swings back towards the front doors indicates it is a AP6 - the AP5 didn't have it) , the station wagon is a V8 Regal Station wagon, and the bottom is a Regal so can have either the 225 or V8.

Unfortunately it certainly had its fair share of issues.

I reckon you're right. I'm thinking the V8 first appeared with the AP6. Also agree on how far ahead of the Holden and Falcon they were.

The add picture indicates they are the AP5’s with the horizontal tail lights. The AP6 had the vertical tail lights.
I had both but unfortunately neither had the V8, but by gees, those slant sixes had some power. I bought the AP5 to replace the blown motor in my AP6. It came with cheese cutters, pulled out of Tanti Avenue in Mornington, snatched second on the column shift and chiseled a blackie all the way up the hill 🤣🤣🤣.
    Ahh those were the days.
