Fraser Island Sand Vs Stockton Sand

Planning my first trip to Fraser later this year. Have driven on the soft stuff at Stockton. From what I can gather here and in other forums the sand at Fraser Island is alot firmer and is a lot easier to drive on than Stockton beach. Is this right? Just trying to get an idea what to expect at Fraser.

    Regards Adrian

Yep agree with Baz, even I made it around comfortably, mind you I remembered to let the air out of the tyres first, otherwise this happens ( Bribie Island-circa January 2006) see pic below,

Thanks for the replies. My trip is a few months away although I wish it was next week. I'll be sure to video it and take plenty of pic's and post for everyone to see.

Fraser is generally far easier to drive than the bulk of Stockton..... except maybe the beach approach at Inskip Point, where constant traffic really churns it up and it's pretty difficult at the best of times. Indian Head is a bit tricky too - because you are constantly dodging bogged British backpackers in their rental Toyotas.

On the way over from the Rainbow end, just remember to air down at the EDGE of the beach BEFORE you try and make it down to the barge..... the boys on the barge LOVE to make you look like an idiot from the city.....

Hey Stevo, I think LR should buy that pic of yours, forever, and destroy it!
Crikey! At least you haven't added any further to your folio, fortunately.
Why don't you bling it a bit and put on some big wheels and tyres?

After Stockton, you'll laugh at Fraser.

Just a quick note. Having done both there are many traps for the unwary at Fraser. While the sand is harder than Stockton, generally, you can still bog it. AND a neighbour drowned an ancient Troopy crossing a creek, immersed to the roof - but maybe that's just him, poor guy. I agree wth the earlier note about churned sand at the ferry, nearly had to let the tyres down last time.

LOL!! There's nothing like driving home at night along the beach at 80kmh to hit a square-edged washout - or better-still Eli Creek at speed! Going in to the washout is OK (you just fly off the edge) - it's hitting the far bank that hurts..........

Poor old Billy, I think he said Eli Creek, he'd worked on FI for six months and was leaving forever, but the old Troopy stayed for a week longer. Then after a month and about $6k, it came home. I kinda liked it, rough as guts old thing it was, dirty green with the harbour bridge surrounding its body and split rims and bar treadsrough camper gear inside...completely rebuilt and resprayed in shiny dirty green, he sold it for a song.... should have left it there....

    Cheers, GQ
