Drag behind the ship, cant tell if your being sarcastic or not .

Only 2 ways to temporary import a vehicle, pay a security that is refunded on export or by using a Carnet.

We do need a sarcasm smiley.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Looking into doing the same but then for a year (maximum visa I can get afaik).

Shipping from germany (next door from the UK) is about 5K euro's for a 40ft container (can hold two cars). I am not aware that australia needs a carnet de passage but if it does, it requires you to put down a deposit of the value of the vehicle. You get it back when all entry and exit stamps are taken care of. A costly business...

What has already been said: the car needs to be so bloody clean you can literally eat from it. Shipping in a container would do that trick but if you need to drive if from somewhere deep in the country side uk, probably in winter conditions most of your work will be undone. You could check out these guys: YouTube

I tend to agree with most people on here that shipping for only a few weeks is not that efficient but I can certainly understand the charm of driving your own vehicle

Unfortunately I still have some saving up to do before I can start a year long loop of oz

    Cheers,
    -P

I did look breifly into this but the type of tracks I want to do (Ellis. Cobaw and Strathbogie) which all look hardcore tracks or lanes as we call them over here, I don't think hire companines would be happy for us to use there vehicle for this sort of abuse.
It's the same with buying an old disco over where you are unless I spent £10k kitting it up it wouldn't be up to the challenge, the truck I was going to import is a defender 90 with front and rear lockers, 37inch Treps, front and rear winch and roll cage so is more suited to those sort of challenges.

Obviously I'm are still at the very early stages of any planning, I have read about the carnet but as you say the issue is more likely co-ordinating the logistics that's going to be the issue.

Ideally somebody to take delivery and getting it from the port to a secure location whilst awaiting our arrival would be the best solution.

Your 90 is over the top for a touring vehicle and you may encounter legal issues being that it is modified, you could probably buy a well enough equipped D2 for this terrain for a reasonable price.

The vehicle is fully road legal in the UK and is similar spec to the trucks used in the Youtube videos, 'Defender 90 Orkney' which are all road legal in Australia

Yes but not passed Aussie engineering like local vehicles mostly have, it won't be road legal as it is.

Does an import car touring need an Aussie inspection?

Really, you want to do Ellis Track , I want to see a photo of your vehicle, I drove up there before youtube & the internet on a Jeep Club trip, I had a Ford V8 , Auto , G60 transfer Case , Front & rear maxi drives on a hybrid 90 with SAT's and it wasn't easy. there are not many vehicles capable enough , no Family tourer is going to cut the mustard.

Sorry I should have explained it's not a tourer, it's been built for extreme off road it's classed as a challenge truck in the UK, I think you call it comp trucks.

Here are some photos as requested, I've looked into hiring and no-one has anything that would be allowed to go on any of the severe tracks.
