Some African-Americans use the word amongst themselves, apparently to reclaim its use, but that's wildly different to someone who's not African-American using it.

Check the pronunciation. It is nee - ger with a hard g. Say it quickly the way Danes speak and what do you get?

Originally a geographic term for people from the Niger River regions of West Africa. You know, where the unwilling immigrants to the New World came from. Negro means black in some languages. Pelikan drawing ink had a colour, Negro.

Niger is Latin for black.

Oh, I've been out plenty. I've lived in a country where, for the sake of not being a local, I had to carry a finger-printed ID card at all times that the locals didn't carry and which any police could demand to see at any time. I've had 9 out of 10 barbers refuse to cut my hair so that I had to travel halfway across one of the world's biggest cities just to get my hair cut. I've had taxis refuse to stop and people refuse to sit next to me on the train. I've had a woman who was sitting next to me on the train catch my eye as she was getting off to make sure that I saw that she was brushing herself off to get rid of the way that I had contaminated her.

But that doesn't give me the right to use racial slurs.

Definitely not, and thankfully, it appears that your experiences didn't turn you in to a morally offended, violent, store looting, protestor, so why is everyone theses days retro-offended?
A lot of things are not acceptable today that were OK 50 years ago but, why let the ghosts of the past haunt?

If someone is offended by the ****** word, I suggest they go get a can of harden up.

Ive worked with marines and the number of times I've heard those of dark skin call each other ******, address others (including myself behind the bar) with something along the lines of "Sup, my ******" and at no point that I observed were they offended, was I offended nor anyone in the general vicinity offended. if theres a select few people who are offended by something then perhaps they should stop insisting to the effect that the word is offensive and is a slur against all of (insert ethnicity here) and just personally avoid the generality of situation where whatever it is offends them is happening. For example as an atheist I am put off to varying degrees for various reasons by religious better than thou sanctimony, homosexuality, Paedophilia But you don't see me going to church and proclaiming its offensiveness to the masses.

Right or wrong The name of the dog in the movie was ******, Imagine if for some reason your name became offensive in the future how would you (or more specifically how would you expect your then loved ones) react if it was decided to change the name on your tombstone and better yet, how would you feel if it happened in your life time and you had to change your name?

Let's work on the future. STOP trying to change the past.
