I hope that is not going to be the case but I would be surprised if they let it go.
Where the hell am I going to get that kind of money?
You think I can just pull $96 out of a hat?

Can't they just let me die in peace knowing that after 50+ years of working and paying taxes, I finally managed to get something back from the Government?

For sure - it is a bit of a joke but don't pay it and it will not be funny - they are nasty to the bone when they want. Even though I personally have nothing to do with Centrelink, they stole my tax return a few years back and refused to give it back - was only after I initiated legal action that they took action - yep was a TFN mistake so someone elses name, who owed money got linked to my name - they were interested in investigating until forced to my threatened legal action and then it was the ATO not Centrelink that sorted it.

I wonder what it would actually cost to collect $96 from me if I don't want to pay up?

They will do what happened to 370,000 people under robodebt - threaten to farm it out to a debt collector who will visit your house and seize your TV or other items to the value of the debt plus a healthy commission. Keep your car keys secure.
I'm not joking - it actually happened.

If you are receiving a pension or allowance they simply deduct it from that. Allowed to take up to 14%. If not on a payment then such a small amount is usually ignored as not being cost effective to attempt collection. Taxation refunds of people not receiving a payment are commonly snavelled or wages garnisheed. Garnishees are often used to collect arrears of Child Support. Some women would not take action to receive Child Support from an ex or father as they feared he would come around and bash them when his wages were reduced.

I did my aged pension application on line the other night and got a message on the MYGOV system that it has been approved on Friday.
Now I await the hoops and hurdles that they will throw at me before I actually get the pension in October when I turn 66.

Well done! That was fast. You must have been very well prepared.
They should advise you of a date when the payments will start. I get messages like that on the Centrelink Express Plus ap.

Its not my first rodeo. There is a lot that needs to happen before it gets to that - I get to have my day in court.

Dont panic when you get that phone call telling you that the police are on their way to arrest you for unpaid taxes. This is Australia - it just doesnt happen like that - yet!

I thought the $38 per fortnight pension was funny. Taking it off me a few weeks later, when nothing had changed, is hilarious!

As for Robbodebt? The public servant who thought that was a good idea is an idiot!
