Yes, but Keating wanted it to keep rising to 16%, which should have made people self-supporting, but one side of politics has repeatedly frozen the rises, so it hasn't happened.

Getting the pension is easy, time consuming but straight forward. Keeping it - now that is the tricky bit!

    I sure miss that $27 a fortnight!

This is what is actually going on with the superannuation guarantee.

Contributions to your super are set to get a boost next year — but coronavirus could send the plan off the rails - ABC News

We have always contributed to our super ourselves,as well.We have actually put the maximum in every year for many years.

There are good tax reasons for doing this.

Thats what many fail to do,they would rather spend it now,and forget about the future.

Sure there are many, that for whatever reason, genuinely couldn't top up their super over the years.

But there are others that could have, but didn't,and will be relying on the govt to fund their retirement.

Yes, we spent five years before retirement contributing the maximum each to our super to build it up. The contributions were pre-tax too, so they lowered our taxable incomes. You just have to learn to live on a lower income now to benefit later.
