It sounds like there are still some Ex PMG old lags still employed. Yes, after all this time.

Interestingly I am getting fewer and fewer parcels delivered by Aus Post. In Yass TNT/ Fedex now run their own delivery services and in many locations have appointed local agents for parcels that are not able to be left without a signature (although not in Yass sadly). Australia post must be missing out on a lot of business that they used to get as being the "last mile" delivery service for the multinationals. I'm not sure if DHL are still handled by Aust Post or not though.

The UK experience with last mile post for letters saw a number large entities pushing to open this up to competition with Royal Mail
Most then withdrew from it as could not make a profit. The government even told their departments to move to these new operators so they could gain critical mass
These operators then demanded and received agreement from the government that Royal Mail should do the last mile delivery for them
Of course those who could not make a profit due to the high costs of the last mile are constantly complaining that they are being over charged by Royal Mail for being allowed access to their services
Parcels here are a separate division of Royal Mail called Parcel Force with their own delivery network
Recent experience - Sydney to Melbourne - 6 days to get from ‘received at facility’ in Sydney to ‘At Melbourne Airport’ in the history.
We ordered a part from Perth last Thursday at 3.40pm Melbourne time - we got it at 2.50pm the next day via the suppliers courier company - we didn’t even ask for overnight shipping and it cost less than my small package from Sydney (which I still haven’t got)
If Aust Post was a private company it would have gone under years ago. It’s one of the last vestiges of government infrastructure incompetency and I will never use them - I just have to put up with suppliers that use them unfortunately.
With the amount of 'Deliveries' by Auspost each day, I reckon they're doing OK.
I posted a parcel item, at my small, rural PO, on the 23rd of this month and it arrived at its destination in Gladesville, Sydney, on the 25th of this month.
I'm happy with that!
